How deep do I need to bury a mailbox post to get it "good enough?"

Mail lady popped my mailbox and it snapped off below the ground. Other than where it snapped, it looks fine so I'm just going to dig a hole right next to where it was and put it back in the ground. It'll be a little shorter than it was but how deep do I need to go if I pour some Quikrete as a footer? I was thinking like 6 inches would be good enough (my wife agrees) without it looking noticeably shorter than it should be

I would say about 1' to 1.5' and yes add ready mix to secure it in place.

In my case, I bought one of those premade 4"X4" treated mail box stands. All I did was measure the height of a couple of my neighbors' mailboxes and dug my hole deep enough to make my mailbox roughly the same height as theirs, then just added ready mix. If I remember correct, I ended up having to go about 1.5' deep. Its solid as can be.

One of my buddies did this and the mail lady quit delivering and left a note that it wasn't the proper height. He was pretty peeved because it was only around 3" shorter than post office regulations. I'd be pretty aggravated as well

USPS has allowable heights and distances from street for mailboxes listed on their website.

Yeah that would aggravate the hell out of me

I'll measure when I get home and see if it's long enough to meet requirements when buried

At 6” I think you’d be worried about it leaning or falling over after it getting bumped or after a good rain.

When you go to HD to get your concrete, walk over to the mailbox section.

Buy you a new post, and while you're there look at the instant foam stuff by the mailbox posts. You can use it instead of concrete. That way when you have to do it again in a few years, you won't have to dig out the concrete.

And be sure to tip your mail lady for Christmas!

Can't just buy a new post because our neighborhood has those fancy decorative posts and they have to match that's why I'm trying to reuse the one I've got if i can. The foam is a good idea though, I'll check that out

Bury it six inches. Sure, the mail lady might not be satisfied, but who cares? If it’s good enough for the wife, it’s good enough for her. In the end, if you’re satisfied, that’s all that matters

bury it 3 inches and watch from a window the mail lady's reaction when she shuts the box and it falls over backwards.

What's the post made of?

Might be a way to lengthen it?

In all seriousness, is this one of those mailboxes that you just put over a wood post? Considering you mentioned it has to be a matching neighborhood mailbox.

Go no deeper than 2 feet. 1 bag / foot of Quikrete Fast-Setting Concrete Mix. We just did ours at 1 foot and it isn't moving anywhere unless it gets hit by a car.

Probably a good 18” to keep it standing up but the main thing is the bottom of the box needs to be 41 to 45 inches from the road surface.

Bury it at the correct finished height, the existing post is not going to work for that. If it snapped at ground level it will need to be buried 12-16 inches and wind up way too short.

If it is wood, you can maybe tie back to the original post. Something like This on Amazon . If you can get it set in it, consider getting a PT 1x1, pound it down along the old post to act as a brace, screw it together, paint for HOA.

Probably should just replace it with a new post
