AC tech said my 3 year old capacitor is testing weak and wanted to charge $150 or so to replace it. I’m fairly handy and YouTube says this is an easy swap. Opened the service panel today to see what capacitor I need to order and am greeted with this:

It’s a Jard 12932 10MFD capacitor ziptied and wired to a Totaline P291-4554RS 45+5MFD dual run capacitor.

1) Why did the tech install like this?
2) What capacitor do I need?

Unit is a Lennox 14ACX-042-230-12, I *think* it’s all original, but not positive.

The big capacitor is a "dual capacitor." One side is for the fan and the other for the compressor.

The fan on the unit was likely replaced and came with the 10Mf cap. So they abandoned the 5MF side of the dual.

Not sure which one he said was weak, but likely the larger one.

Edit: Are you having problems? Why was the tech out?

Take a pic of the wiring diagram, it should be on the inside of the panel you took off. Mine was wired with 2 like this and I removed the smaller one and put a new dual run like in the diagram. Odds are you just need one of the larger ones. Order for $15 or $20 and keep on hand when yours fails.

This was suggested to me elsewhere too. How can I confirm the fan was replaced? Pull the side panels?

No issues. He was out for annual maintenance. Said it was starting to test weak.

Edit: if the fan was replaced, assuming I would just need a 45/10 dual run now.

It would be good to check the fan motor as it will have the micro Farad reading on the side of the motor, and then purchase either a 45/5 or 45/10 dual run capacitor for the unit and appropriately wire - it is very easy for a DYIer. AmRad makes a very good USA made capacitor.

The fan a motor is usually very accessible without have to take panel off but would a photo of your outdoor condensing unit. As stated keep a spare, you can keep the two capacitors currently on the unit as a spare if you replace them with a single dual run capacitor.

Perfect. I’ll check the unit tomorrow and see if I can access the fan motor to confirm the mfd requirement. Appreciate the help!

I am an idiot when it comes to these things and this is simple l. The hardest part might be pulling the disconnect

If you're going to do it yourself make sure you take a rubber handle screw river and discharge that thing.

Just took a look and you’re right. Fan motor has been replaced at some point and it is a 10MFD motor. Will be ordering a couple AMRAD 45/10 capacitors.

Unit started up while I was out there and didn’t make any weird noises, might let the current capacitors ride a little bit longer.

Should have spent the $150.

vs the $40 I just spent on a capacitor?

Or is that a subtle “if you have to ask, call a pro”, in which case how about I want to be sure I order the right capacitor and don’t want to shut my AC down twice to do so? No hurt in asking a question. If you have nothing of value to add, keep scrolling.

Bought my Amrad on Ebay from a Florida supplier- good selection, good prices. Get a length of the metal strapping with holes as the Amrads are fatter and the old bracket my be too short/tight to hold the Amrad.

I cut a piece of flashing as it was handy, but the strapping is the way to go.

I bought a 15uf for my blower motor from the local Ace Hardware. Dude had a shelf full of all sizes of capacitors. Chinesium but didn’t have to wait.

If the compressor and fan motor are originals then go with whatever the manufacturer states on the data plate. If something has changed, like the fan motor, you'll need to match that and the compressor. Amrad or Titan HD capacitors, most decent supply shops will carry a large variety of either but just make sure you get exactly what you need. Oversizing or undersizing a capacitor is going to do nothing but cause more expensive parts to wear out sooner.
