What type of grass? Has it completely greened up sufficiently that you’ve cut the grass (not weeds) twice? If not, it’s too early - generally not safe for the turf grass to do an entire lawn application of herbicide during the lawn “green up” phase.

That’s why it’s best to treat lawn fertilization and herbicide application as two separate, independent lawn management activities. Weed & Feed (fertilizer & herbicide combined in a single product) is simply a convenience product for the home owner but it has a limited time application window in which it can be safely used without potential damage to the turf grass.

What fertilizer and herbicide do you recommend

You’re not going to like this answer..it depends.

To me, fertilizer is just like protein powder. Just give me whatever whey protein after I workout and that’s fine by me. No need to get the fancy stuff, but depending on your grass type, maturity, and health you will want to get higher or lower macro nutrient levels.

Herbicide is completely different. You’ll need to figure out what weeds you have, and find a herbicide that targets those weeds.

Weed now. Don’t feed until at least April 15th.

As stated, it depends on your grass type and weeds you are trying to control.

But as for me personally I use LESCO 24-2-11 for St Augustine & LESCO 15-0-15 on centipede (I have both grass types). Fertilome makes good lawn fertilizers. I would suggest you use a delayed release lawn fertilizer where some of the nitrogen in the fertilizer is quick release but most most of it is coated with sulfur or a polymer to release the nitrogen slowly over 2 or 3 months.

Post emergent herbicides - my go to herbicides for broad leaf weeds are Fertilome Weed Free Zone at temps less than 85 F; MSM Turf & Celsius at higher temperatures for broad leaves & grassy weeds, & SedgeHammer for nutsedge. Use a spreader-sticker (surfactant) like Hi Yield Spreader Sticker in the herbicide solutions to increase absorption-efficacy (usually recommended on the herbicide label).

I don’t use Weed & Feed products.
