Mosquito Hawk Problems

I live in gonzales, and I’ve noticed an abnormally large presence of mosquito hawks this year. Can’t walk out my back door without them swarming me, and anytime I walk through my yard I kick you a ton of them. Is this normal, or is there something I should do to help prevent this?

Not a mosquito.
Those are crane fly's and are good guys. Because one of the things they feast on is mosquito larvae when in the their young worm like caterpillar stage. They live and breed in the same water and only look like gigantic arm biters.

Thanks for the new information! I always called them mosquito hawks. I guess it’s best to let them prey on the actual mosquitos while they’re around. Just seemed like way more than usual this year

There are at least two in my house every night from the kids leaving the door open.

Mosquito Hawks are the same as dragonflies.

Just looked them up. They do not prey on mosquitoes - this is a myth. The larvae eat plant matter. The adults rarely eat anything during their 2-week lifespan.

Just looked them up.

What Do Crane Flies Eat?
Many people are surprised to learn that crane flies do not eat at all as adults. The adult stage of the crane fly is short-lived, lasting only a few days. The sole purpose of the adult crane fly is to mate. Once mating is complete, the crane fly will die. The larvae of the crane fly, however, are voracious eaters.
They consume almost anything they can get their mandibles on, including other insect larvae, small invertebrates, and decaying plant matter. The larvae are often found in damp places such as tree holes, damp soil, or among piles of leaves.
After initially being told this by a do-it for a living biologist.

I have the same problem. They are always getting in the house even if I quickly go in and out. I usually let them outside because they are harmless but I wish they actually lived up to their name

The term "mosquito hawk" is often used for crane flies as well as dragonflies. Crane flies are NOT mosquitoes and do not eat mosquitoes but they also pose no threat to humans as they do not bite or sting like a mosquito. Dragonflies DO eat mosquitoes but not enough to impact the population of the annoying creatures. They also pose no threat to humans.
The term "Daddy Long Legs" is more often used in relation to the cellar spider. They also pose little if any harm to humans however they do include the recluse and black widow as prey.
