Neighbor's cypress knees

Ive got a bit of a predicament. My neighbor has a couple of cypress trees in her yard. Once a year they shed their leaves directly into my swimming pool. I can actually deal with that mess. But the cypress knees are slowly making their way into my yard and erupting into the foundation under my pergola. I think they're finding their way towards my pool. Im afraid that one day they'll start bursting the circulation pipes in my pool.
Has anyone ever dealt with anything like this? We are on very good terms and I hate to mess that up but I dont think I have any other choices but to ask her to remove the trees. Is there any type of cypress deterrent?

Cut the root runners with a reciprocating blade. Got this advice about roots and knees right here and it was a fantastic suggestion. Works great and is relatively easy to do. Just get a 5 pack of inexpensive blades (10" or 12") and go to work. Don't dig up anything, just stick the saw into the ground and keep moving until you hit runner. Cut those knees off also.

You can also inject some "nutrients" directly into the cypress knees with one of these if the neighbor tells you to pound sand.

That’s an excellent idea. Thank you!
12” is deep enough?

Most of mine were within a few inches below top of soil. I cut out about 80-90 knees. Cut off 4 big roots that were running under sidewalk. Had a small cluster of smal knees next to it so I knew it was trouble coming.
FYI we have an oak in the back and some of the roots found their way under our patio and pushed a few pavers up. I ended up cutting 3 roots . Just stuck the saw in. Pulled trigger and kept going till I hit a root. They were 2” runners going under pavers and toward house,
Some great suggestions on this site. Saved me from doing this stuff the hard way. Used an axe for first couple then posted a question on this board.

I have this problem too. Did you leave the root down there to rot or did you dig up the pavers and take it out?

Cypress runner/plumbing/electrical line... same thing

Not sure if serious. You know those things are all buried much deeper than 12" by code right?
That being said, I probably wouldn't stick a saw in the ground without calling Dottie first.

cut off the top of the Knee, drill several holes in the now flat service, pour round up, full concentrated, into each hole. Fill regularly. That is if you want the problem gone for good.

This will work, but it may kill your neighbor's tree. Just saying.

how big are the trees?
if they are healthy they are going to keep sending roots your way so it may be a regular maintenance issue on your end. On the other hand if the trees were on your side youd probably have cut them down by now LOL

probably about 25-30 ft tall. im going to try the sawzall trick first and see if that helps. I wonder if theres any type of deterrent I could put down to keep them from coming towards me?

My neighbor plant 3 trees on his lot right next to my fence after they had been there for a few years.
I’m now dealing with knees off his trees.
When I recently put sod down I tilled my yard on that side and cut a bunch of his roots. They were surprisingly easy to pull up after they were cut.

Did this work? We have the same problem and are afraid the roots will be deeper than the reciprocal saw. Our neighbor has 2 large cypress trees along our fence line. I have seen knees next to our house and our pool is dangerously close to the fence. Do you think the roots could bust through the concrete of my pool looking for water? It was suggested to build a trench and put concrete in it to stop the roots from coming in my yard.I am hoping for an easier solution. Is this my problem or do my neighbors bear any responsibility? Also from what I read- killing one root will not kill the tree. You have to cut it down and get rid of the entire root system. They grow back easily.

I doubt it.

I am in a similar predicament. Copper Sulfate is used to kill roots in sewer pipes without harming the main tree. I don't see why I can't apply topically and get the same result, so I'm going to try that. Might be worth a shot?

I would offer the neighbor to pay to have them removed. If she's decent, she may split the price with you. Hopefully, she doesn't like the knees/mess in her yard either. Short of that, you'll keep having to worry about it and you'll have to continually deal w/ the mess in your pool.
