Just finishing a major renovation on my house. I want an alarm system and I am considering Nest vs. ADT. After research I’m on the fence and am just looking for input from people who have used each system. Pro’s and Con’s of each. Thanks in advance.

No input on those 2 brands. I heard ADT adds up to alot per month. I just replaced my old simplisafe system with a ring system and I like alot better so far. I heard the Adobe system gets good reviews also.

Don't know how much you'll get for those 2 but I'll give you mine just in case.

Went with Eufy. All data is stored locally, don't want to take the chance that some creeper from Amazon(Ring) or Google(Nest) is gonna be checking my OT10 wife out. I'm not gonna give shady companies like that the chance or my money.

But I've also heard about the pay for play companies like ADT and Vivint just adding up to a lot of extra costs when there are so many easy DIY options out there.

Eufy has been good to me so far and like the other poster...I've heard good things from Abode.

I’ve had ADT about 8 years. I had free installation but of course my monthly note was higher. Started out first year paying $53 a month and then I called wanting to cancel and they lowered it to $33 a month. In the last 6 months they raised it twice and I’m up to $41 a month now. I called threatening to cancel and they didn’t care I only have burglar alarm, no medical or fire.

bro do NOT get ADT

I'm locked into a 1-year contract with them at $50/month (I'm a dumbass, I know)

the alarm system is CONSTANTLY texting me. when a fricking cat runs across my yard I get a text to let me know it happened then another to show me the video. even when it's unarmed. I was working in my front yard on sunday afternoon for like 2 hours, I later went back and had like 65 texts from ADT from every time it picked up motion

and I had a guy come out two separate times to try and fix it, I basically said, "when my alarm system is disarmed I don't want any texts" - but both times they said, "yeah our system doesn't actually do that"

meanwhile twice in three months I have come home and opened the door while the system was armed, and it didn't register it somehow.

so basically it's a daily annoyance PLUS it doesn't even work for its intended purpose

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck ADT

I have Nest (we are an all Google home) and have had zero complaints.

I have actually never heard anything good from any ADT or Vivint customers FWIW

ADT is expensive as shite. Long story short, I paid about $4000 for an install, plus $59/month. Got i cancelled and redid everything with Frontpoint, installed it myself for about $600. and $49/mo.

If you don't want to pay a monthly monitoring fee, there are others. I recommend any DIY route.

Did you have to go through a company to put a package together, or were you able to buy them off the shelf? I am with ADT now and am looking at either Simply Safe or Nest once my contract expires. But, I have 4 doors and about 15 windows that I need coverage for. The best "solution" they are proposing is a motion detector for my larger room (eliminate 6 windows), but that doesn't work when we are sleeping and have the alarm on "stay"

Care to share a little more about your experience with it? I've been looking at getting it since I already have the outdoor IQ cams and the doorbell.

Set it up yourself? Do you have it monitored, if so who does their monitoring and how much is it monthly? Are the open door sensors good/easy to install? etc.

Yes. All of the Nest equipment has been super easy to install. If you can install the cameras and doorbell, you can set this up.

No, it isn't monitored by anyone because I get all the alerts on my phone and if I need to, I can just call the police myself.

That's the way I'm leaning.

How do their door open alarms work? Do you have to attach them on to the doors? Battery operated? Where does the chime come from when they are opened?

We have ADT and it's under $60 a month. Only had a 1 year contract with them since we have USAA and they allow us out of the contract anytime. We have ADT Pulse with one camera. That's probably my biggest gripe is the cost of their cameras to add on..and they aren't that great.

I wish other systems would be compatible...but they aren't. I've received a couple of false alarms but nothing major. Glass breakage sensor goes off everytime we are washing pots under it..but that's a frequency thing. As long as it's not enabled no alarm...just the beep.

The one time we had a problem was when I was on travel and the wife was at work and we had a glass breakage sensor go off and ADT called me...I allowed them to call the cops...turns out wife had a sun catcher on the window that fell and hit the metal blinds and that tripped the sensor.

Know your laws in your area for false alarms reported to the cops...some places only allow you so many and then start fining you.

Also ours didn't really help with insurance premiums...just FYI.

I have a ton of nest cameras and such. Doorbells. Indoor, outdoor. They work great.

I have the Nest alarm and it's meh. The siren is also the keypad and it's lame. You can add monitoring and such.

I was/am very underwhelmed with the nest. If you could add a really loud exterior siren to it I'd change my mind completely.
