Any suggestions for pre-emerge and for killing nutsedge once it shows up without harming st Augustine and Bermuda grass? Thanks.

Sledgehammer is not cheap, but a lot of the do it yourself sites sell a single dose of Sedgehammer+ the + being that it already contains the surficant. Mine has gotten bad this year, so that’s what I’ll plan on using next year.

pre-emerge

No pre-emerge for nutsedge. Sedgehammer (halosulfuron), Celsius Xtra (contains halosulfuron) as already recommended for post emergent control. Personally I’ve also had good results from “Image Kills Nutsedge” although I use Sedgehammer now. All safe for St Aug and Bermudagrass.

I recently bought a bottle of Empero Nutsedge Killer. It’s basically generic Sedgehammer. Same ingredients, slightly cheaper. Hopefully I get good results with it.

Image has a product that kills nutsedge in both St. Aug & Centipede. I'd use that if you have alot of it. Cut your lawn first with a bagger, then apply the Image.

If you've got just a few plants here and there, pull it up by the root when the ground is wet. I've eradicated a large amount of crabgrass that way out of a Centipede yard I had years ago.

While I haven’t noticed great success on sedges, the instruction book for specticle flo on page 21-22 does list annual sedge, globe sedge, and kyllinga, as some of the “grasses, monocots, and sedges” controlled or suppressed. I did put it out this spring, and maybe the sedge section of my lawn developed later than normal, but I still had a huge section of sedge explode this summer. I had good success with certainty on Bermuda grass knocking it back. It certainly yellowed it all and it doesn’t grow back as fast after being cut. However it did come back after a couple months and I have been trying to re-treat it this week. I used dismiss last year and dismiss seemed to wipe it out more dramatically than certainty. With dismiss, the sedges turned brown and dried out. Certainty was more yellow with slow growth thereafter. In my flower beds, I used a spray bottle of fertilome sedge control and that worked about like dismiss. I think it is the same chemical at a lower percentage.

Might as well post LSU AgCenter facts sheets on the 3 most common lawn sedges and recommended controls.

Yellow Nutsedge

Purple Nutsedge

Green Kyllinga

Anybody know the shelf life of sedgehammer? My bottle is 3-4 years old. Should still do the trick, non?

I just checked my bottle of Sedgehammer, going to spray some this AM, and it’s 5 years old and I haven’t noticed any reduction in efficacy when using it. I do keep these “expensive” granular herbicides, as well as Specticle Flo (liquid), in a conditioned area though to make sure they are not subject to extreme cold or heat.

Newbie question? Is this a whole yard spray? Like mix in and spray the yard? or spray as you see them, like spot spray? We have a grass company this year, but this weed and that little stringy one that has a purple stem with little green leaves are starting to get annoying.

I would spray the whole yard. They spread pretty quick. At least at first. Just sprayed mine. Have prosedge. Still pricey. I'll never use the whole bottle though.

It can be both but you just need to be careful when spot spraying b/c it’s easy to overspray and damage surrounding grass. But the label instruction for most of the herbicides discussed here are whole lawn spraying in 1000 sq ft units, and rarely discuss spot spraying, though some do.

Though I think I know the weed you are describing it would be best to post a photo of the purple stem weed with little green leaves just make sure one of us can identify for you and tell you what herbicide(s) are most effective.

Hey Craw, do you know how many grams per gallon for the sedgehammer? I have the big bottle not the small one dose packs. I think its very concentrated (75% active).

Mine came with its own little scooper and is 0.9g per ksqft. For my sprayer, this is equivalent to a per gallon mix. Make sure to adjust based on how much coverage per gallon of water you get.
