Porch ceiling suggestions

I have ripped all of the masonite on my back porch and waiting for it to be hardie planked. In doing so I had to take the moldings off at the ceiling. Before putting new molding I want to do something to the plywood ceiling. What are some suggestions to make it look better? As of right now I am leaning towards bead board. If that is the route I go should I paint it or stain it? The hardie plank is going to be painted white or something very light. Thanks.

I have a stainted t&g pine ceiling on our back porch and I love it.

You could do beadboard plywood and then paint it a very light blue color. That along with the white/light hardi plank would look really good in my opinion. A stained beadboard ceiling would look better depending on the other colors in the porch.

T-111 plywood looks great. It has the grooves.

That is exactly what my plans are unless someone comes up with something better.

Is that more of a tongue and groove look?

bead board or a t&g panel would be nice

That’s what I used when my house was built and I think it looks pretty good, certainly not as nice as tongue and grove boards, but looks much better than regular plywood.

T&G boards would be hella expensive. If I was looking at it right they are about $20/board right now. That is the same price as 4X8 sheet of beadboard.

I installed t&g pine painted light blue with Benjamin Moore arbor coat paint. T&g pine on a ceiling is a pain in the arse (and neck) to install and I won’t do it again myself. You have to wedge each piece in the make a good seam.
For my back porch I used cedar fence boards. I cut the dog ears off and planed one side until smooth. Stained with arbor coat in a transparent brown color. Easy install, just push them together and face nail.

I like that blue color. What is the exact color? Thanks.

I believe it is silver mist or maybe Celtic blue. I’ll take a pic of the can tonight.

There’s also Hardie soffit that mimics BB. I used some on my front porch...

I was dead set on hardie beaded board for my ceilings but after installing the soffit, then I realized while installing soffit you have to use a nail with a decent head to hold it up. Unfortunately that would take away from the look IMO. You could use hardie sheets and frame 4’ square sections to hide the nail heads. That would look good but not sure if it would be sturdy enough. Hardie is heavy!

Coon, I really like that white blue. That is exactly what I want. I sent my wife a pic and she loves it as well. The only difference is I will probably go with the beadboard for cost reasons.

All true. I got around it to a degree by framing around the perimeter with the 1x6 Versatex and base cap, which hides them, so there are very few visible nail heads. But most people won’t have that option.

And it looks great! All that detail work looks great.

Appreciate it. I still have some prep and paint work to do, but since I’ve basically been renovating the entire house, there’s a long list ahead of that.
You took some time planing down that cedar on your back patio, but I bet it made for an easier install than T&G overhead. I’m going to be doing an outdoor kitchen soon and I might have to steal that idea.

If you're really getting into the blue shade, there is a classic color that is "acceptable" for historic homes. The history of it is that it's supposed to keep evil spirits away and potentially helps stop pests from making nests because they think it's the sky or some shite.
Anyway, might be cool to tell people it's that special shade of blue.
Called Haint Blue I think.

yep
