It’s time for a new mattress and the wife wants to move to a king. I have no problem with that (I’m a hot sleeper and we’re about to be on baby number 2 so the extra room would be nice). The problem is the bed frames are ridiculous. She’s looking at upholstered and they’re all around 2k. Anyone have good experience with some of the more reasonable ones from wayfair or other places. I don’t think she’s stuck on upholstered but does want a headboard.

Have purchased many from Wayfair. It’s the way to go. Joss & Main and your PB and RH are vastly overpriced.

You can typically find one you like on an expensive retailer site and search it for comparable models on wayfair and other sites

We got it from here: LINK

But counterpoint, what else do you use 8 hours every day that will last many years?

I'm getting ready to make a queen size bed out of cherry lumber. I'm getting the lumber for under $2.50/board foot, which is a steal.

I’ve bought several from Zinus and have been very pleased with their pricing, thoughtful packaging, quality, and even the handy ratcheting hex wrench they include for assembly!

We spent $7k on furniture for our bedroom. Never replacing it. Real wood and beautiful. Got our own dressers and nightstands with all the space we need. Hell it might outlive me.

I built our king bed frame. Going on 10 years with it now, 2 horses could screw on it and it wouldn't squeak once.

I have been pleased with everything I’ve ever bought from Wayfair.

Build one yourself. You can build the frame itself from regular pine lumber and dress the stuff you can see with something pretty. I did ours out of cedar. Probably $300 of lumber and a couple evenings of work. Its super easy and you end up with something very solid and pretty.

Where the hell are you getting Cherry for 2.50 a b/f? I'll buy a whole truck load of that. Are they normal 8' or longer lengths?

I built my bed frame also but it was out of alder. I'll never buy a piece of furniture unless it's a couch or chair (I don't do upholstery). I got so tired of every bed I've ever owned developing creeks and making noise any time you barely moved around. My bed is solid as a tank and doesn't make a single noise even when you try to bang the headboard against the wall. I'll try to remember to post pictures this afternoon of mine.

You got a design in mind for the bed? Always curious to see different bed designs. I'm starting to build a 2800 sq ft shop that'll have a office/efficiency attachment and I'm looking forward to building the office desk and furniture once the shop is done. I really want to build something out of walnut. Stuff's super expensive but looks so dang good when it's finished.

Can those of you who built beds post designs? I’ve been looking as well.

I have connections of a lot of foresters and guys who have mills in Missouri. My dad worked for the Forest Service there for 35 years dealing with hardwood timber and milling.

He has a friend that runs a big sawmill that will mill and kiln dry it for 2 bucks and a little chance per board foot. I'm buying as much as I can and either my dad will bring it to me on a trailer or I'll go see my dad and pick it up myself.

The supplier i usually go to in Dallas area sells 8/4 cherry for $7/bf, do i will buy as much as I can get my hands on.

That's a heck of a connection. I use Barney Robinson in Fort Worth. It's in the ghetto but they have a good selection usually.

And meeple, I'll post the bedroom furniture I made when I get home this afternoon.

I'll have to check out Barney Robinson in Ft Worth when I'm in that area. I usually go to McKinney Hardwood there in McKinney because the guy is nice and it's closer to me. Phoenix Hardwood in OKC is really good but Dallas is closer to me than OKC.

McKinney Hardwood has a pretty good selection of domestic and exotic, but doesn't carry any sheet goods. Which isn't that big of a deal to me, I pretty much only ever use sheet goods like baltic birch to make jigs and things like crosscut sleds. I don't build stuff with sheet goods.

Barney Robinson has mostly domestic woods. For 99% of what I do with it, they have what I need.

I'm wanting to find some Black Limba for an office desk. Have a feeling I'm going to have to sell my kidney to afford it, but really like the way it looks.

I'm interested in seeing a picture as well. I'm still not sure if I'm going to make one of the spare beds out of cherry using standard type build, or go with a tusked mortise and tenon build so that there would be zero hardware used in the joinery, or castle joints, etc. Haven't made my mind up yet.

McKinney Hardwood has some beautiful black limba for $8/bf for 4/4, $8.50 for 8/4 and $9 for 12/4.

The owner runs the hardwood business out of a detached garage and is a really nice guy. Always has really nice stuff and skip planed so you can see the grain very well to pick out what you want.
