Removing snow from roof

At what point should consider removing snow from our roofs? It a 33 degree pitch roof with I would estimate 8” on it right now. I can’t imagine south Louisiana roofs being built to support that much weight.

Your roof should have supports every 12' of linear run. This is for snow load. I'm not sure for how much snow but you should be fine.

I have much more on mine. It's over a foot. I have no way to remove it. If I could lift a bulldozer up there maybe.

Well, the snow is basically moving out of Louisiana now, so if you are there, there shouldn’t be any additional load on your roof at this point.

The weight is not an issue at all. But ice dams are. Google ice dams.

If you are seeing a mess of icicles I would be concerned. A dam forms at roof edge causing water to back up under the shingles and run into your house. A big problem in northern climes.

Would it make sense to use a leaf blower to blow the snow out my gutters before the full melt?

I lived in a houseboat in a marina north of Atlanta in college and as part of my slip rental I agreed to help remove snow from the marina roof in the event of a snow storm. I thought it was a pretty good bet that we wouldn't get any snow and I would never had to help remove it. I was wrong LOL. We got about 8 inches once and me and another full time resident of the marina spent the better part of the night up on the roof of those damned docks shoveling snow off into the lake. It was a MESS. Thankfully they were pretty shallow pitches...probably about an inch of rise in a foot of run....just enough to encourage water to run off. It was MISERABLE LOL. A couple of years after I sold my boat in that marine they got about 5 inches and 2 of the docks turned turtle and there were 6 people shoveling snow off them that night. 2 of them fell off the docks and into the lake that night LOL....alcohol may have been involved. If I live to be 300 before I have to shovel snow off a marina dock roof again it will be to damned soon....

The first time a guy in Michigan told me he needed to shovel the snow off his roof, I thought he was joking. Another reason to not go too far north.
A house we rented in SD had instructions for using the gutter heating cables in winter. Mark SD off the list for permanent residence.

I cleared the roof area above the eaves yesterday. I did find some ice dams or layers of ice underneath the snow forming on the back side of the house that wasn't getting much sun. I guess it was worth it.

Open your doors to the attic or if a single hatch, put a fan up and your heat on 74. Gone in a day. But if you have a normal roof and supports 12 on center, not a problem. Will be good after sun in a day or two.

I'm putting a hose to it if it's not gone by lunch today
