We bought a new house last fall and I’m looking to upgrade my battery powered push mower. I went from about 1/10 an acre to 1/3-1/2. From the research I’ve done, it looks like Cub Cadet, John Deere and Husqvarna are the 3 most recommended, widely available brands. The base models of each are all around the same price. Anybody have any recommendations on these or any other brand I should look at? I want to keep it under $2k.

The engines I’m looking at for those 3 are:
Cub Cadet - XT1 - 18 HP Kohler
John Deere - S100 - 17.5 HP or S120 - 22 HP V-Twin ($300 more)
Husqvarna - 18.5 HP Briggs and Stratton

Cub Cadet is made by MTD avoid anything made by MTD. JOHN Deere will be expensive parts wise. Husqvarna is a solid brand. Recently purchased this one from Lowes a couple of weeks ago. $200 over the base model but with a larger 22hp BS Intek engine, 3 year bumper to bumper warranty, 46 in cut, and has cruise control with the hydrostatic transmission. $1,899. Worth paying the xtra $200 for that much difference.

Note: Husqvarna/AYP made the prior Sears Craftsman mowers but they are now made by MTD for Lowes.

Husqvarna is the best brand there is, just be sure to get the thicker deck version of whatever model you decide to buy

Can't argue with that, but at least parts availability is usually really good.

My experience with older MTD parts is hit & miss.

Snapper still makes the "old school" style with rear engine close to your price range.

Isn't flashy, but would be great for a yard your size and if you have limited space (it can be stored vertically).

Primary builder of Murray, Huskee, Yard Man, Cub Cadet, and now Craftsman lawn tractors. Have a history of not holding up. The tractors made by Husqvarva/AYP have less problems. Older Sears Craftsmans, Poulan Pro, Weedeater, Roper, etc.

MTD's Powermore engine is made in China.

In that price range I would get a Husqvarna ZTR with the Kawasaki engine.

For just a little more money you could get into a Hustler ZTR with a true welded deck also.

ETA: stay away from the old school riding mower types. The ZTR can dramatically reduce your mowing time unless you have an empty lot.

Anything but a briggs engine. YMMV but the last 2 I've had have been oil burning pieces of shite. Didn't help they went bankrupt. I'd take Kohler, Honda, or Kawasaki if you can get them on the platform you want. The only exception I'd make for Briggs is if you opt for the "forrest gump" Snapper. They cut amazingly well and if you have an open lot it's worth it to save over the ZTR.

I'm on my second MTD built riding mower and I'll probably buy another when I the time comes. My first was a 52" MTD brand when I had two acres to cut. I put 300 plus hrs. on the mower and the only parts I changed were the belts, pulleys and blades. I now have a 46" Cub Cadet LTX that's going on 10 years. Again the only thing I've changed are the pulleys and belts& blades. I beat the crap out of both machines.
Best value for the money in my book.

Snapper has discontinued this style. 28 inch is no where to be found and I've only seen a few places with the 33 inch. Been looking for a 28....

Worth it.

Also, for what it's worth, I got my E-120 in 2018 for $1900 with a 20hp motor. 22hp would be nice to have.

That 30 second Easy Oil change on that John Deere S100 or S120 is going to be very expensive over the long haul. Plus it only changes 1/3 (0.8 qts) of the oil. It isn't a complete oil change. I can buy the SuperTech st3614 oil filter at Walmart for $2.97 plus 1-2 qts of a quality synthetic oil and change it on my Husqvarna way cheaper.

Thanks for all the info and responses. I’ve got a pool in the backyard so there’s honestly not enough grass to cut for a zero turn.

I started looking at the rear engine mowers initially but they’re only about $100 cheaper and have much smaller engines. I’ve got a concrete slab behind my garage that’s about 10’x10’ that I plan on covering so I’ll have plenty of room to store my mower.

Depending on the yards total square footage your cutting, a 33" rear engine may be enough and the HP will be enough for the blade it's running. IMO, the 33" will give you the best finished cut unless your terrain is really even. My yard has slopes, berms, & trees. My 42" JD is big enough to do it quickly, but it looks the best when I use my 21" Toro which takes twice as long to cut. YMMV.

Snapper classic. I've seen some used ones for cheap. My dad has one that's about 25+ years old. 14.5hp briggs.
