Saw a rat running on my patio-- How to get rid of them?

Sitting on my patio this morning with my wife and a rat went running along the wall and went behind the stairs to what I can only assume leads to under my house. My wife, of course, freaked out.
I'm in a raised, enclosed pier and beam in N. Dallas.
She called a local, highly recommended, independent pest control guy who said that with this heat and drought we're having, it's not uncommon.
Not good enough for her, so she called another company who wants to charge us $2,500+ to come seal up all exterior holes and points of entry. Then set traps and check them several times a week. $2,500 seems crazy.
We don't have bird feeders, pet food out etc. This is the first time since moving here we've ever seen one. I'd like to just throw some rat poison under the house, around perimeter, but she's afraid of the dead animal smell that could potentially happen. I'd be fine setting kill traps around the perimeter, but I don't really want to go crawling around in the crawl space to fool with either dead or live rats.
Any suggestions?

Me neighbors planted cucumbers in their backyard and all of a sudden I had the same problem. Bought the black plastic victor snap traps and caught 7 with peanut butter the first 2 days. None since. I think the cucumbers are not producing as much now too.

I have no issues and a lot of success with your basic snap trap. Just bait it with a bit of peanut butter and tie it off to something.
I will use a bit of nylon twine and tie one end to the staple that the trigger arm of the trap is attached with. You'd be surprised how far a rat can run with a trap if not killed quickly.

I'm lucky that I have cats, owls, and eagles around me. If you don't have any animals to worry about I'd get those poison cubes and toss them around

The old adage about seeing one rat means you have dozens was not true for me. Might not be true for you either. I’d get a couple of Victor snap traps, set one on either end of your patio, and see what happens. If you catch several over the next week or two, maybe you do need a pro, but I agree, $2500 is insane. And no offense, but women can get hysterical about this sort of thing. If it comes to it, YOU need to choose and deal with the exterminators.

Modern day rat poison is fantastic. They don’t die immediately. Also, they die of dehydration , so you will usually find them out and about looking for water. I had a nest two years ago due to chicken feed spillage and everyone of them died in the driveway or yard.

Corner it
Box it in
Set traps
Fish it out in the direction of the trap
I did this a few weeks ago and it worked surprisingly well

I used to get an occasional rat or mouse around the house or garage. I got a couple poison bait stations and haven’t seen a live one since. They eat it and go off and die somewhere else. Just check them occasionally to rebait. Available online, hardware stores, big box, etc.

I have outside cats. They have eliminated moles, rats, mice, and a chipmunk.

Go to the outdoor board and click on the latest snake ID thread. Ask the OP to capture the snake and drop off at your house for a small fee. You’ll have about 12 cotton mouths by Sunday once the word gets out.

An occasional squirrel is not out of the question for "Big Head Todd"... a bull dog of a cat...Jowls... Head the size of a softball..., very protective... He got on a train of racoon kids following MOM because the walked through part of the yard...

I'm ok with getting a cat, but only if it stayed outside 24/7. What do I do? Go to the SPCA and get an adult cat? What if it's been raised indoors it's whole life and isn't a great mouser?

Just go down to the local hardware store and get some victor traps of the appropriate size. Bait one with some cheese, one with peanut butter and one with shelled pecan half. Enjoy the challenge of trapping those frickers. Set them along walls or in some cover, as they don’t like wide open areas.

I've used poison bait, snap traps, and now the sticky traps which I put around the bait. I put the bait in old empty tuna cans. The little suckers get stuck and can't get out. I feel better knowing they died a slow, agonizing death by starvation and dehydration in the sticky trap than a quick death in the snap trap. If they eat the bait and escape the snap and sticky traps they also die a slow death but have their freedom in the process. I find it interesting that you can't pull them out of the sticky glue without ripping their nasty little legs off.
King snakes outside are very effective as are rat & Carin terriers . Not a cat fan.

I went on a mouse slaughtering when u first moved to my house in Allen tx. Unfortunately when sharing an alley with people, some things you just can't control. However I massacred them mofos for everything I could and it probably helped the whole neighborhood. Snaptraps, thr black clamp style because they're way more reusable and you don't have to touch the blood and guts and a tootsie roll was the Bair I killed it with

Outside cat. I'll loan you "Julie". Best killer we have ever had around the house. Mouse/bird/lizard/squirrel = dead on the porch.

Ratx is good shite. Rats die of dehydration, because it kills the thirst center of their brain. Jesus Christ that's diabolical. So if you're into agonizing death for rats, I suggest RatX.
They also claim on their website that they have zero secondary kills.
