Ventless gas logs

We have an older house with two fireplaces. Had someone come check them out and found that they have issues in flue etc. Gave us an estimate of around 40k to fix them…crazy. Had another company come out and they suggested just switching to ventless log set.
Do any of you have these? I definitely like the price even with paying a plumber to move gas lines etc.

We have one and its just a heater, can not stand it, wish I had gotten a real fireplace

I have "ventless" and don't like it. It uses propane and the smell gives me a headache. Natural gas might be less smelly if you have that option.

We have a couple of ventless fireplaces. They definitely can put out some heat vs vented logs. We have natural gas supplying ours. Sometimes smelly when turning it on for the first couple of days of the season, usually due to Dust and stuff. But find that after the first few days it's fine. We have a temp sensor on ours that modulates the flame and on/off with the detected temps, so that's nice.

We have them. 2 sets. They are natural gas.
Only smell we get is when you start them up the 1st time of the year.
The ones we have are a bit of a pain in that the thermocouple will only last a couple of years it seems. So, have to work on the
fairly often.

What issues are you having? We were having issues with our which is controlled by a light switch. Turn it on and the pilot starts to heat up the thermocouple then the gas would kick on but then go out immediately because the thermocouple wasn’t getting up to temp. So I’d have to pull the bottom panel off and hard cycle the electric panel. Was a pain. I then started cleaning the thermocouple with a wire brush before every season and it has seemed to help.

Same. The one in the center of our downstairs can heat the entire house in the dead of winter with snow outside. We put concrete balls in it for a modern look. I actually love it. Has a remote control. Pretty badass.
I am a pyro like any other red blooded male and get my fix in my outdoor fire pit

Vent free logs are great. True heat to the home, instead of all the heat going up the chimney

We got some Ventless gas logs to replace a set of Vented natural gas logs that were leaking gas.
These new ventless logs throw out so much heat that we can't use them more than a minute or they are going to melt/burn the paint on the mantel above.
I'm going to have to install a fireplace heat shield if I can find one that fits our fireplace, or get a metal worker to custom make a fireplace heat shield and install it before we can really use our fireplace. Even then we are going to need to let that part of our house get cold. If it still heats too much, we'll have to revert back to a vented set of gas logs.
I had no idea that ventless natural gas fireplaces put out so much heat.

I have one Replaced it twice in 24 years. Works great. Mine is propane and only smell it the first time you use it. It’s not bad if you blow the dust off before the first use. The guy that says it gives him a headache may need new logs. If you crack or break a piece off you are suppose to replace it. No problems out of mine. This is the only heat we use

whether wood or gas any flame still needs combustion air to burn. If there’s no flue then combustion air is coming from your indoor air. So don’t use these ventless logs in a small or confined area

Have it. Don’t like the smell. Also always thinking carbon monoxide poisoning thoughts while using. Wish I had wood burning with flue.

Same situation at our house.
Previous homeowners put one in downstairs and have to crack a window open even when it’s freezing outside because it heats the room up so quickly.
They also ran electric and mount above it for a TV. Didn’t think anything about it but the fireplace puts out so much heat upward the fireplace overheats the TV which I never would have thought about. Googled it and it seems to be a common issue and they do make a metal heat shield for mantles.
As for now, ours is off almost all the time now

I put two monitors above ours

Had the same fear.
Mine looks like this now, but without the rocks in front or metal base. They're in a standard looking stand that the old fake logs were in:

Our Vent free logs are great. Lots of heat for the home, instead of all the heat going up the chimney. I bought the lower BTU log set. Just so I can leave it on longer without overheating the home.

I built a home entertainment center around my propane fireplace with ventless logs. It works great and as others has posted it will smell when it is used for the first few times. My sinuses are very sensitive to the propane exhaust smell so I normally crack open a window when the fireplace is on.

I have a ventless gas log FP. It puts out good heat and has a slight smell because you are burning natural gas unvented (like a gas stove).
It is fine but I fought to not have the damned thing when we built. Not a fan of fireplaces in S Louisiana in general.
