Is anyone familiar with Japanese cedar and how it compares to pine?

You mean besides price? Cedar is going to be more expensive but should be a lot better in the long run as opposed to treated pine fence boards.

It is more resistant in its natural state compared to pine and will probably age better and last longer. Plus, lots of treated pine fence boards will twist or warp somewhat as they dry out and shrink.

If I had the choice of the two and price was not a consideration, I'd opt for cedar.

I think the Japanese cedar is a different animal than the western red cedar we are accustomed to. WR Cedar is great. I used some on some shutters when I bought my house and eventually took them down to change the look but the unpainted back sides against my brick were in mint condition. I ran them through my planer and the wood was pristine.

Thanks for the replies. The price cost going with Japanese cedar isn't much different than pine. I think I'm going to go with cedar.

Wooden fence Project

I completed a large cypress fence project last summer. 1x rough cut cypress is a full 1” thick, doesn’t warp & ages beautifully. We laid out our fencing horizontally 14’ length s w/ 7’ spacing.

This website indicates that pine is better than cedar for humid climates, which I assume would include Louisiana. Can anyone speak from experience on this?

I've had my cedar fence up for a year and it looks great. Like a work of art when the sun hit its and wear looks great after a full summer. I have been diligent about clear UV stain though when I built it and put another coat on already this year.

Don't judge the yard, its been sodded since.

That does look nice. Thanks for the pics. How much of a PITA is it to apply the clear UV stain?

Bought this with zero issues whatsoever. Makes it super, super easy. Have also stained my deck with this and will be painting the inside of the garage so I feel like it was money well spent.

Thanks

Has anyone based in Louisiana had any issues with cedar and the humidity?

I'm in Nashville if you didn't read my thing btw so not quite on your level but def. hot and humid. Most of my fence gets a lot of sun too and it still looks damn good after a summer.
