I'm trying to level some spots in my yard. I've heard that masonry sand, in too large a quantity, will prevent grass from growing. And I know river sand has the potential to be loaded with torpedo grass.

What's the answer? River? Masonry? something else?

Thanks!

Think about water going through a brick wall vs. God’s green earth.

Is sand preferred over top soil?

Mason Sand 100%

I used river silt once and QUICKLY learned my lesson. Luckily it was barren areas so I could nuke it with roundup and all is now well. But NEVER again. It’s worth the 1.5-2x price.

I’d always heard to make a 50/50 mix of sand and topsoil

Everyone talks about the torpedo grass but my biggest problem with river sand is the fleas that may come with it.
I'll never forgive myself for what my poor dog suffered with for the last few years of his life. I could never get rid of those damn fleas before he died.

real mason sand is washed and screened pulverized product, unlike river sand which is “wild harvested”. It is only suitable for covered fill unless you like weeds
