Can anyone walk-on or must they be invited to walk-on? How many walk-on players do they have participating in practices? Do any dress out for home games? Thanks.

There are preferred walk-ons and regular walk-ons. Preferred walk-ons can start practicing earlier I believe and have to be invited. I’d imagine other walk-one have to be invited as well.

I had a friend that was a preferred walk-on. It was set up I believe through Sam Nader. He dressed out for home games. More players are allowed to dress out for home games. He only got to travel a few times. All players get to dress and travel for bowl games.

Thanks. I think Nadar has been there for over 30 years.

I had a buddy who wasn't a preferred walk-on, I forget everything he did but it wasn't any invite or anything. I think he literally talked to a secretary and had to submit some paperwork. Those guys are there to up the GPA on the overall team.

When I was at LSU I went to the Athletic Department and asked how I could walk-on to the team. They have a walk-on day. Preferred walk-ons do not have to attend as they are automatically on the team once offered the Preferred spot. It is ran similar to a high school try out. Drills mostly. I didn't make it.

You have to contact the football administration, send in your paperwork and your film, and then if you are good enough. Someone from the staff, usually a assistant will contact you and offer you a walk on spot.

You can dress out for home games but you are responsible for your gear, you obviously wont travel, and scholarship players get first dibs at practically everything.

All I know is (unless it has changed) they get player guest tickets so that’s a plus. Had a guy I worked with who was a walk-on during the 2003 season. His family didn’t really travel to away games so he let me get his tickets to Bama and Ole Miss. Also, in 2009, my brother’s friend had a son on the team so I got player’s guest tickets to UGA.

Yeah I specifically remember him telling me that he would hear back from them in a few weeks if they were interested, then he left and went to lunch and before he was finished he got a call lol

I never heard about the scholarship players getting dibs. I know he has quite a few gifts that the team was given for Christmas.

This was probably gifts from the Bowl game sponsors instead of Christmas gifts.

No idea under the current staff but years ago (over 20), I can tell you how a spring try out was ran. You would go to the atheletic office and inquire about trying out, submit paperwork for the clearing house and once cleared, you'd report to workouts.

At the time, these workouts were 4 days a week starting promptly at 5:30am (be there at 5:15). These workouts were separate from the team except for players who couldn't make the normal time for some reason, doing rehab, etc. The workouts and conditioning were where people were weeded out. If you couldn't lift a respectable amount for a college athelete or make the conditioning, you were asked to leave.

First day was over 80 people and conditioning was 6 150s, 6 120s, 6 110s, all timed by position group (DBs WRs RBs, QBs LBs FBs TEs, OL/DL) - if you failed to make the time, your group repeated the rep (unless you were way outside the group, ie. an ability issue, upon which you were asked to leave). Second day, only half the folks were left. As conditioning got harder, more dropped off.

If you made it far enough, you participated in spring ball, though 'participated' varied greatly by position coach. Some folks did warmups and nothing else. Other position groups let some walkons perform drills and some may even get a rep or two in 11 on 11. Your workout times also moved to match the rest of the team and you now took part in film study.

Around the time of the spring game came conditioning testing for everyone. As a walkon, if you failed conditioning, you were asked to leave. At this time, the test was two full gasers (one gaser == 0 to 25 yd line & back, 6 times, non-stop), times averaged. Time for the 'fast' group was 58 seconds, 60 for the middle group, and 62 for the big boys. Passing conditioning did not gaurantee you a spot - it was still up to the position coach. Most dismissed all new walk-ons in their group. A total of three of us were offered to come back through try outs in the fall; everyone else was given best wishes.

Hope that helps.

A lot of these games have already covered. I'd definitely send coach Nader an email if you wanted someone to be a PWO. It was offered to a sibling and accepted. They're only have so many PWO spots to give, but they're rarely taken up this early.

Don't know how if works now but after my senior year in HS I received a letter from the LSU coaching staff requesting I walk-on. I excepted and when I reported for fall practice (prior to school starting) I met about 9 other players. All had been invited.

It changed after DiNardo came in,

Before DiNardo, if you walked on and did the required work, you stayed on the team. In the Spring of his first year, I was a walk on. Offseason weights and conditioning were mandatory 4 days per week: 5:30 am workouts with the S&C staff followed by conditioning which usually required running stadiums inside TS.

Spring practice wasn’t bad, and there wasn’t anything especially hard. However, after the summer, they made all of the walk-ons, that were not preferred, go through tryouts and they only kept a handful out of 45.

The tryouts included: 300 yard shuttle for time, max bench reps at 225, max pull-ups, pro-agility and 40 yard dash.

That had to be before scholarship limitations. There has to be more than 3 walk-ons today.
