re: LSU Baseball 2025 (and beyond) Recruiting Thread

There are a couple of reasons I doubt it becomes super common.
1. The best usually just go to the NPB and can get paid right away.
2. They can post after 9 years in the NPB and become MLB free agents and negotiate massive contracts at ~27
3. They can post a little early, but after they're 25, and skip arbitration. This allows them to bypass the lower money seasons. You need 6 full seasons of MLB service time before you can enter free agency. Skenes will only need 5 because he was the rookie of the year, but he'll still be 28-29 before he can negotiate a contract.
4. Japanese baseball culture is massive. A guy like Roki Sasaki (recent dodgers signee) signed a minor league contract (normal contract for drafted players) with a sizeable bonus, but has MASSIVE Japanese endorsement deals because he played 4 years in the NPB and came over at 22/23.
5. NIL is limited for international students.
Financially, it likely makes more sense to stay in Japan and play professionally for a few years. Minimum NPB salary is 108k, average is 275k, median is 235k, and higher end players are in the 5MM range.

Thank you. Interesting post. The NIL would have to be massive to get me to move to another country, take classes in my non-native language, cope with homesickness, acclimate to different food, social scene, etc.

quote:Yeah, and even then, any NIL deal that required participation (autograph signings, appearances, commercials) likely violates US visa rules. Not making this political, but I'd imagine it will become even more difficult under the Trump administration.

Now if Sasaki (Stanford player) signed an NIL deal with a Japanese national who was a Stanford grad or Japanese company, I don't believe he would be subject to the same rules and limitations. I think the limitations are on US based companies/providers.

Those were a lot of good reasons for Japanese players rarely making it to a U.S. college here, but I think 1 thing really stands out to me even
Language barrier, most Japanese speak little to no english, it's a huge culture and shock for them to come to a place potentially where nobody speaks japanese at all (like baton rouge). Stanford is at least somewhat comfortable because they have a nice japanese population there and probably have no issue getting an interpreter if needed...Baton Rouge? Would be incredibly tough for a Japanese teenager to make that transition to Baton Rouge.
This isnt like a spanish speaking person coming here and theres someone who speaks spanish at every other corner.

Perfect Game JUCO final Top 10 of 2025.
Recruit Harden comes in at 10
Former commit Vanek at #2, he's listed at 1B and not pitcher
1. Matt Barr, RHP, Niagara – The lean right-hander possesses explosive stuff sitting in the mid to upper 90’s with a pair of 3000 spin breakers. Likely draft pick and a name that has gathered steam after throwing exceptionally thus far.
2. JC Vanek, 1B, Chipola- The most polished bat in the country. Tons of feel to barrel with flashes of solid-avg power. Two-year panhandle producer that has a shot to get popped if the signability matches up.
3. Donovan Becerra, RHP, New Mexico JC- Tall lean and athletic right-hander with starter traits. Lively mid 90’s fastball and quality secondaries have racked up the whiffs in 2025.
4. Henry Allen, IF, Northwest Florida- Big name going back to his prep days. Has shown massive right-hand power and performed at a high level in the best Juco conference in the country.
5. Jacob Johnson, RHP, Pearl River- Long lean build with looseness and arm speed. Can run the fastball into the mid 90’s with command and big traits to the spin. Still projects with already high-octane stuff showing. Sub 1 WHIP and 1.08 ERA
6. Patrick Spencer, RHP, Pearl River- Huge physicality and presence on the hill. Will get the fastball up to 98/99, feel for two plane breaker with hard downer bite. Vast improvement to the overall command has skyrocketed his stock.
7. Ryan Martin, IF/OF, Georgia Highlands- Athletic mold with positional flexibility. Gigantic performer so far this season, batting .439 with 18 pumps.
8. Trace Mazon, IF, Weatherford- Year 2 of being a standout stick in a World Series caliber order. Compact athlete with clean RH stroke and batting .435 on the year with 13 bombs.
9. Luke Orfi, IF, Florida Southwestern- 2-year Juco producer. Wiry athlete that should stick on the dirt. High level bat speed and feel to barrel has shown flashes of real right-hand pop. Threat on the bases, already has tallied 27 bags in 2025
10. Daniel Harden, OF, McLennan- Compact athlete with easy left-handed swing that barrels often and shows a good bit of thump. .333 on the year with almost twice as many walks to Ks.

quote:
2. JC Vanek, 1B, Chipola- The most polished bat in the country. Tons of feel to barrel with flashes of solid-avg power. Two-year panhandle producer that has a shot to get popped if the signability matches up.
Guess he might not be making it to FSU after all. IIRC he committed here under Mainieri, when Jay came in they didnt want him as much, told him to walk on or something and he decommitted and went to JUCO instead. Looks like he committed to FSU in JUCO last year. I know he got hurt late in high school or something.

10. Daniel Harden, OF, McLennan- Compact athlete with easy left-handed swing that barrels often and shows a good bit of thump. .333 on the year with almost twice as many walks to Ks.
Curious to see how he fits in next season here

Mainieri took him as a pitcher and then he had TJ. Jay honored his commitment but cut his scholarship % twice and he decided to look elsewhere. Had offers from every other state school but wanted a P5 offer. Bet on his himself and went to JUCO. He's a good kid. Happy for him.

yea but he was back senior year pitching, it was more he was high 80s only touching 90s and jay was recruiting a machine overall.
but very very happy for JC, he is a good kid and works his arse off. If he ever puts it together in the weight room....kid could be a monster.
i hope he goes to FSU and kills is to be honest and then goes 1st/2nd round. He was very polished bat in HS and has only gotten better.

If you click on the prospects name they give a pretty detailed profile.
I don't really see any HS prospects that are a lock to go pro. They all have some developing to do and most would prefer to do that at LSU rather than the minors. Of course every player has his dollar number and if a team meets it, they go pro. I don't see a Konnor Griffin type of prospect that has no chance of getting to campus, nor do I see anyone that is going to be a star the minute they step on campus.Ebel is polished but doesn't necessarily have big tools. Everyone else has some things to work on.

I seen young recently in the top 10 of some mock drafts with them stating that’s he has had a really good spring.
Posted on 4/21/25 at 10:17 pm to Tigerfan14
I'm not sure how up to date these profiles are. Young obviously has some big tools, size, fluid, decent speed, bat speed, power bat and a arm that has hit 102 MPH across the diamond. According to this profile he has some issues hitting offspeed. That is the type of weakness SEC pitching will exploit. He will have to work on that, if true.
He's going to be offereed a big pay day based on his potential. Jay's job is to convnince him to have a high number and to stick with it. We know we will lose some guys to pro ball and he is a likely candidate but I'm not going put anyone in the no chance category.

I think they put out that list in December. I would think another update is coming soon, but im not sure. I feel like MLB.com has fallen off with their draft/prospect coverage, but maybe im just not paying as much attention as i used too. It seems like their updates are far and few between.

quote:I don't know, Moss is a Curiel type of bat. He's a day 1 starter in the outfield if he comes here. On the 20-80 scale, He's rated higher than Curiel. Hopefully he gets the same feedback as Curiel: Need to see more power.

Ebel is likely your starting 3rd basemen from day 1.
Sime has ++ velocity. Control is an issue, but stuff is there.

The age of the portal just makes it tough to play as freshman at a program like LSU. You have returning starters, 2024 class that has been waiting their turn, then you add plug and play portal guys and it will be tough for any freshman to start year one.

How I look at it is: landing 1 of Young, Moss, Ebel is expected, landing 2 would be exceptional. Absolutely no one can read how the draft will play out this year, there's hardly any consensus.

Young seems like the yearly freak athlete with tools too good to pass up on in the draft. I feel like we never get the black, athletic freak onto campus

- Bobby Bradley
- Justin Williams
- Rece Hinds
- Justin Crawford
- Delino DeShields
MLB scouts salivate over the athleticism.
Ebel feels like a guy who's been around the MLB too long to go to college. Something about the dad being with the dodgers makes me feel like he won't make it.
