Any old timers remember the LSU-Tulane wheelbarrow parades in Garyville?

LSU had to win and cover the pointspread. When that happened, Tulane fans had to push tiger fans in wheelbarrels. And vice versa. I remember it being a big deal for my dad and my uncles, one of them was a Greenwave fan.

I remember an Arkansas Razorback pushing a Tiger fan down Burnside in Gonzales when LSU defeated Arkansas in the 1966 Cotton Bowl. Old Timers remember.

I remember when Tulane fans somehow unlocked / opened the old cage - and let Mike loose — on LSU’s campus

My father is a greenie. He said that when Tulane won in 79, none of the LSU fans showed up to the wheelbarrow parade
A few years earlier, my uncle was the starting RB for Tulane. Apparently, during game week, the LSU team ended practice by burning an effigy of him at the stake .

That's the kind of stuff that made old college rivalries awesome.

I remember it. They used to show it on TV every year, always with the Tiger Fans getting the ride.

Didn't New Orleans have their own version of that at Norby's?

I’ve seen Tulane beat LSU more than once but LSU won the last matchup I went to in the Dome. After the game, 2 guys from LSU got in a fight with 2 guys from Tulane. It was very civilized - they paired up and squared off like boxers. One LSU guy hit his Tulane guy in the face and knocked him to the ground. When the Tulane fighter started to get back up, the LSU guy yelled “STAY DOWN!” and he did. The other two exchanged some punches and the LSU guy came out on top of that one, too. The crowd around them started chanting “LSU! LSU! LSU!” and it was over.

New Orleans football fans who didn’t go to college or went to UNO were mostly Tulane fans. Tulane had a real advantage in recruiting N.O. prospects. Not saying the athletes would go to Tulane but the school was often in the mix.

Why was it held in Garyville? Halfway between LSU and Tulane?

Norby's was an awesome neighbor bar that is now Patois. The most infamous 90s Uptown drug dealer/underage party thrower for private school kids was shot and killed there. That was pretty much the end of Norby's.

They did have a Tulane/LSU wheelbarrow race there. Tom Fitzmorris had a great article about the tradition and the bar.

Because two locals in Garyville made a bet between themselves and it was an event from that date. Also had an event in local gymnasium selling food, drinks & snacks after the parade. Best days.

Yes I’m from LaPlace and went to it at least a couple of times in the 70s. Good times. It was a pretty big deal in the River Parishes. People came from LaPlace, Reserve, Lutcher and Gramercy for the festivities.

No doubt it was fun stuff. Back when Tulane was sometimes relevant.

I've seen it in 73, 81 and 82!

14-0 in 73 in Tulane Stadium.
48-7 in the Superdome in 81.
31-28 in Tiger Stadium in 82. (Last game in TGBFTL)

The Rivalry used to be intense like Bama-Auburn and Ole Miss-State.

Hard to imagine that, but it was!

If Fritz can keep them in the Top 20 and relevant, get em back in the SEC and start it up again......
