On March 29th. He did hit a guy Tuesday but he's actually been pretty good his last several outings. I see some posters saying he should never pitch again here. He had a bad night but he's actually been one of our better relievers. Benge, Rizy, Mayers, and Schmidt have all been pitching better lately. Hopefully this was just a one off.

I'm much more interested in seeing the bullpen come together than the bats. We knew the hitting was just a slump and wouldn't last long. Jury still out on the pen.

Absolute mental collapse. I would never trust that again in any game you have a chance to win

He’s pitched a total of 3 innings between State and tonight.

ETA: 13 walks in 15.1 innings pitched. It’s not great.

And thats 20% of his innings for the season. That's his role on this team. We want 1 good inning per week to bridge to Cowan and Evans. We're not asking him to be the Sunday starter. He threw a clean inning last week at auburn

Well if we’re looking for 1 good inning per week and he comes in a walks 3 guys and hits a batter in 1/3 of an inning, do we not need to be concerned?

You're proving my point. All of them came early in the season. He was starting to come around. Obviously tonight was a set back but no reason to overreact rest of season

I’m not proving your point at all. He is not reliable at the moment.

In conference:

5.1 innings
5 hits
7 walks
7 ER

It’s crazy because he had a 6 run lead and a man on first base with one out. All he needed was strikes. Let them hit it.

That’s too much to ask most years for the LSU bullpen for some odd reason

Your including last night which I'm hoping was an anomaly. College pitchers have off nights. The previous 4 or so outings were pretty good. He was coming along. No he's not reliable right now. You can't pitch him again this weekend after what he did last night. But the fact is that we need him because he's one of our better bullpen arms. He will pitch again on Tuesday and if it goes well he will be right back next weekend.

Very few college bullpens at any school ever have a consistent back of the bullpen...you'd know this if you ever played or even watched much college ball

Keep benge as a midweek reliever. He’ll have a role in postseason when we can’t only pitch 6 guys.

I certainly hope he gets better and it was just an awful night for him, but for now I agree with what you said.

When you give 4 free passes when up 6 runs that is incredibly concerning to me.

You can't overreact like this with college athletes or you'll never get anywhere. These guys are still developing. If you only played the guys that were ready on day 1 then our lineup would only consist of Milam, Pearson, and Curiel and thats it. You have to work on these guys if you want to have a good program and win something in June. A lot of yall dont understand that everything isnt about winning right now. There are lots of really good players that have bad nights. You need to understand why statistics treat outliers as outliers.

I really think Benge is coming along but we'll see. He needs more chances after what he did vs auburn last week. That was the first time we had a guy pitch a clean inning in relief in SEC play outside of Cowan and Evans. That's something you have to try to build off of if you want an elite team.

Well, these two things can’t both be true.

Maybe you haven't noticed but only 2 relief pitchers have been trusted in games that we have a chance to win and both of those guys are still available this weekend

Right. We have 2 trusted arms and Binge hasn’t shown he’s capable of even eating an inning or 2 is conference games.

So, he’s not “one of our best” arms at this point. There are 2 or 3 guys that will get innings before him, not including Evans and Cowan.

I may be wrong….but didn’t he pitch to one batter vs. Auburn? He walked the batter and Jay immediately took him out.

Benge is the guy Jay went to to secure a win without burning up Cowan and Evans. He was, for a moment, the 3rd most trusted relief pitcher on the team going into last night. Now the bullpen has been in flux all year and it didn't work so yes Benge will fall down a few pegs for now. But Jay isn't going to overreact. If Benge comes out Tuesday and pitches a clean inning he will go right back to being the #3 RP. Unless Rizy Williams or Schmidt manage to supplant him over the next 2 days which I do think happens eventually because of the upside of all 3
