You are correct - you don't know basketball. If ANY part of the ball is above the rim, then it is goaltending.

Agree! Never understood why this was part of goaltending.

I'm going to cut the Ref's some slack on this, even though they sucked most of the night. The shot from the half court camera, made it look as though the ball was off the rim.

Nothing in the rules refers to the bottom of the ball. It refers to the ball which is interpreted to any part of the ball. It was goaltending by rule. They also missed basket interference against Kentucky. They miss calls every game. Great Tiger win!

Agree with you. The only view that shows it was still above the rim is the angle from above the backboard. No refs up there.

Idk why our fans are so hell bent on proving that it wasn’t a blown call.
It doesn’t really matter.
We’ve been screwed by SO MANY calls recently as LSU and/or Saints fans that it’s about time that a 50/50 call with the game on the line went our way.
Just enjoy the win baws.

What you pasted only refers to a defensive player. Read the first sentence.

Show me the distinction for offensive players. There isn't one in the rules I read.
Under the only goaltending rule I found in NCAAs rules, LSU did not goaltend.

you're thinking of offensive interference. two different things.

There was missed basket interference on LSU and Kentucky on that play.
Posted on 2/13/19 at 12:53 pm to Charlie Arglist
from my understanding completely outside of cylinder.

Dicky V said it was a legit basket, that's good enough for me!
Posted on 2/13/19 at 1:52 pm to Charlie Arglist
Yes.
It was goaltending.
The Kentucky player did not interfere because the had was not on basket when ball was on backboard

quote:not a foul. Ball must have been on backboard prior to the hand thru. Clearly that was not the case.
KY player passes his hand thru the rim
at this point LSU should have scored and should have been KY's ball with a second or less
We got away w a close call. Enjoy it.

It seems this game has either broken the brains of most LSU basketball fans, are just proven most of these frickers know nothing about basketball outside of watching an LSU game.
People are posting rules that have nothing to do with the play in question, and actually claiming ball was outside of cylinder even with undeniable photo evidence this is factually incorrect.
It’s great that LSU won, even with how it ended. It’s just sad fans are proving themselves to be clueless. Y’all sound like those football fans who make noise when their team is on offense.

Completely inside. But goaltending includes any ball with the potential of going in. (A judgement of the referee.) So in this instance the direction of travel of the ball is relevant. If the ball had struck the rim and still traveling towards the goal, it would have been goaltending even if not within the cylinder. However with the ball travelling away from the backboard after striking the front of the rim, it was a good tip-in.

I officiated basketball for 25 years and if it was on the way out and/or more than halfway out in my judgement, I didn't call it...

don’t know but when the ball is coming OFF of the rim like this one, I never see it called.
Posted on 2/13/19 at 5:57 pm to Charlie Arglist
They called goaltending on Emmitt Williams a couple games ago but the whole ball was just barely over/in the cylinder. They rarely call it if part of the ball is outside the rim or even a foot or so above the rim.

It’s clearly a very misunderstood and tricky rule to enforce.
IMO offensive goal tending is a strange rule to begin with.
I think this is one of those “letter of the law” cases. By the letter of the law, that was offensive goal tending. But I’d bet the vast majority of people wouldn’t call that against the offense in that situation.
I would guess the only reason offensive goal tending even exists is to provide some level of fairness to the defense (in other words, if the defense can’t do it, we can’t let the offense do it). This was a garden-variety tip-in... maybe it was technically a violation, but we see those kind of tip-ins/dunks all the time.
