Interesting to hear Ben Mac talking about how involved Skip Bertman is with the program.

I don't have a transcript, but last weekend I think Ben said Skip meets with JJ a couple times a week to discuss players/program direction etc. Skip attends practices often and provides feedback/advice to JJ. He made it sound like Skip was basically hands on and involved almost daily... I assume he did the same with Mainieri?

What's tRant's thoughts on the former coach this closely involved? I don't really have an opinion either way, but I can see why some would love this and some not.

We all know Skip is a LEGEND and GOAT. The question is about the dynamics of the situation, not a question of Skip's knowledge or abilities.

Skip is far enough removed from the program by time and age for this to not be a huge deal. Why wouldn’t you want advice from a guy that truly loves the sport and was a master of that craft? At the end of the day, it’s Jay Johnson’s team so it’s up to him to decide what data is important and what should be ignored. If the meetings with Skip were a waste of time, he could easily tell Skip thanks but our talks need to cut back or cut all together.

I think you're overstating what Ben said. Skip is still around the program as he should be. He watches the team and meets with JJ pretty regularly and probably lends advice. I dont think that means he's "hands on and involved daily." He's certainly not calling any shots.

I don't see any negatives about our current coach getting advice from the best college baseball coach ever. JJ can act on it or not.

I think it's a win win for LSU baseball and Skip.

That will always be contingent on the person the coach is. For Skip, that means a guy who has no desire to thrust himself into a situation where he is not wanted, and his time as an AD probably helped him to work with a coach in an advisory or mentor role rather than as someone telling them what to do.

It is also my understanding that Skip only offers advice when asked and that Jay Johnson relishes the opportunity to pick Skip's brain, so it is a win-win scenario in this situation.

Well, he built the progrum, and the fact he's still involved speaks to the value LSU places on its storied history and tradition of excellence in collegiate baseball.

Skip is about to turn 87. I'm not sure how detailed the advice is that he is giving.

He made it sounds like it was pretty significant involvement, but you might be right. I'm definitely not going to listen to a 3 hour replay to try to quote him exactly. Just wondering if others heard the same thing...

I didn't think about the AD type relationship, great point.

Jay and skip get along very well. Jay welcomes any input skip has on his teams. Skip isn’t directing him on what to do he’s merely offering perspective and advice. Always good to see things from different angles.

It’s an incredible opportunity for JJ to talk with a living legend of LSU and college baseball. Skip is an invaluable asset to mentor a younger coach, wealth of experience and perspective. Even if they just shot the shite, who wouldn’t want to do that with Skip?

Well, all you have to do is listen to Nick Saban talk about Skip as the only AD he has had that was a successful coach that understood.

"People who win consistently have a systematic approach," Saban told Louisiana writer Leo Honeycutt, who is working on an upcoming biography of former LSU baseball coach Skip Bertman, who was Saban's athletic director at LSU. "The goals are well defined and you have to get all the players to buy in and make adjustments on the fly based on personalities. There's a lot of books on how to be successful but very few on how to stay
successful."
"ADs who were coaches understand competition, players and ups-and-downs. They don't take losses like fans and aren't affected by what everybody else thinks. They're also pretty even-keeled when you win and they understand the next challenge. A lot of ADs now are more business-oriented and don't always understand what the coach needs to be successful. Skip was there to help but he never once meddled. He was always supportive and understanding even when we got criticized for things that didn't go right."

I can assure you nobody hates losing more than Jay.

CJJ has mentioned this before, and not that long ago during one of his OTB weekly segments. From what I took from it, he has huge respect for CSB and loves to "talk" ball with Skip and get his thoughts on different aspects of the game.

I love the fact that Skip is still involved with the program, no matter what the capacity is.
