Why are those the only two options?

How do we know the parting of ways wasn’t mutual? What if they both agreed it was time to go in a different direction?

I think the emphasis on velo happened well before this year. It has become the culture of baseball at all levels. We can complain about guys chasing velo, catchers in a knee down stance, and the portal - but I think it’s here and we might have to figure out how to be okay with it.

As people in this thread want to shite on Rizy, it would be nice to remember this… we had 10 returning pitchers this year. Rizy was one of only three pitchers that had a better era than before. It wasn’t much and I’m not saying he improved. My point is that we had problems across our entire pitching staff. It is interesting that fans find it easier to blame each of the pitchers individually for their lack of development/regression than it is to point the finger at the coaches in charge of developing them. If Rizy was the outlier or one of few that didn’t get better, that would make sense. But we really had two pitchers (Schmidt and Fontenot) out of ten that looked better than their previous season. And their improvement wasn’t some drastic breakthrough.

His development never found traction. He had streaks of competency only to be covered up by inefficient performances.
I wish him luck wherever he may land, but I am not sorry to see him move on.

Rizy had dominant stuff, then couldn’t find the plate.

Yeskie must have fixed his issues when he returned to fall camp.

Still think we’ve put too much emphasis on velocity and thinking you can teach control later.

couple of Zac Cowans and his "tiny dancer" would be nice to get

That emphasis is happening in high school and before. Rizy was throwing high 90's before he stepped on the field at LSU.

my man, the coaches get PLENTY of blame on this board and fans are very quick to point the finger at the coaches

Hmm… I wonder what all the guys who said he wouldn’t be entering the portal think about this.

I figured the staff might take one more season to try and fix his mechanics because of the potential, but nothing is certain this offseason.

Do we know if this is the staff telling him to look elsewhere or him deciding to move on? I’m assuming the former, but it’s possible he could want a change in scenery. Or maybe he’s looking for more certainty. There are very few on this staff who will be guaranteed anything going into next year.

I love Cowan, but his lack of an SEC-level fastball became an issue through part of last year and all through SEC play this year. He eventually got figured out. He was still good enough when the breaking ball was on to get a lot of swing and miss and easy outs. But even as good as his breaking balls are, the lack of a real fastball made his margin for error non-existent. As soon as he left a ball up, it would get drilled.

A moderate velo fastball isn’t the end of the world, but it has to have some movement to be effective. That’s what we could really use in the pen- a guy who can hit the zone or just outside with command, but who can get movement on all of his pitches. We got beat up by a few bullpen and Sunday guys this year who lacked elite velo, but who could do just enough to keep the heart of the bat off of the ball.

I think every roster can benefit from a command/weird run type guy. Velo is relative now. They all train it and it doesn’t make a giant difference against the best out there. But the guys with some funk find a way to win.

I really do not understand why our “fans” absolutely must find every worst case scenario to crap on a player. It did not work out. There is not always a fault there or some conspiracy with it. No reason to crap on players that either chose not to come here, or chose to leave here.

I read the headline wrong. Thought it said he'll "hit the transfer portal."

The transfer portal better be huge & less than 60 ft 6 in away if he has any chance of hitting it.

Jay said he only wants strike throwers. No more walk machines will be getting the ball.

I'm pretty sure this is every coach in baseball ever. If it isn't, please point me in the direction of my 7 figure annual contract, because I would want strike throwers as well
