Saw this on one of Larry's little blurbs but I feel like it deserved more discussion.

In his decades as a college football head coach, Nick Saban won an unprecedented seven national championships between LSU and Alabama. But which of those seven championships meant the most to him?

Appearing on The Triple Option with Urban Meyer, Rob Stone and his former running back Mark Ingram, Saban was asked which of his national title wins stick out from the rest.

Saban wasn't able to pick only one and instead called it a tie between his 2003 national title with the Tigers and his 2009 title with the Crimson Tide. Saban explained that winning his first titles at both programs meant a lot because it was the culmination of turning them around after years of struggling.

“I think the first one, obviously was at LSU, in 2003 and then the 2009 first championship here at Alabama,” Saban revealed. “And the reason those two first probably are the ones that resonate the most for me is what I mentioned before, is all those guys came to the program when the program really wasn’t successful.”

quote:

“Once a program is successful, sometimes players come because of what you can do for them, not really what they can do for the university or build a program or whatever. And it’s okay that happens, but it’s a lot more meaningful when all these players came to try to prove something, work their butt off to make it happen, and you’re a part of it, and you grow together as a team.”

“I think those two, because they were the first at each place, were the most special. They’re all great though, because that’s the one thing about being a part of a team. Is when you get a team to reach the pinnacle of success, there’s a lot of self-gratification in that for not only myself but the entire group of people who contributed to it.”

Even after Saban left LSU, the program continued to be good under Les Miles and won a national title in 2007. And after Saban's first title, five more followed.

There was nothing like that 2003 NC. Thinking back it gives me goosebumbs. Maybe the Saints SuperBowl edged it out a little bit but man, what an incredible memory.

I had waited 35 years of my life for that championship. Looking back over everything that’s happened with all of my favorite teams and all the championships I’ve had the pleasure to experience, I really think that 2019 tops them all. The sheer dominance of that team was a wonder to behold.

2003 was something I thought I’d never see in my lifetime. 2019 was the greatest team and the greatest season in the history of college football, but 2003 was special.

He knows LSU was the best overall because it was his first as a young coach but he can't say that because Bama's panties would be knotted up!

I don't think people whose fandom of LSU started in the 2000s or even under DInardo can appreciate what 2000 was like for some of us older folks. LSU football had some lean periods and, if I'm truly honest, never really felt like they would get over the hump until Saban got here. Maybe a glimmer with Arnsparger and of course we were all excited about Bo Rein before tragedy struck but I never really felt like "We could win a national championship, and maybe more than one" before Saban got here.

Saban changed the trajectory of the entire program. Skip Bertman did the same

I remember the morning after the SEC championship after pasting Georgia, and that prick Trev Alberts hardly admitting his wrong yet again, and interviewing Nick while he was sitting by his fireplace. Man that was a great feeling knowing we should be getting that spot for the title.

Living in Cali at the time I was so proud. I went out and bought a big arse tv to watch this game. Then a few weeks later I’m like, wtf, this game is back home. So I flew home to watch it family. Went to Spanish Plaza I think the night before the game. They had a tailgate party at zephyr stadium we went to. All fond memories. Flying back to Cali with an LSU NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP shirt on. Good times. Thank Nick.

Will always love Saban. The retards that hate him should hate Skip Bertman (last few years as AD), Alleva, and that piece of shite Les Miles instead

You nailed it. 2019 was the ultimate football experience. It was like watching a fantasy come to life. I could have done without the 4 hour Vandy game and wish we stomped auburn harder (just bad goal line luck that day) but good lord was it glorious. I remember having such a huge smile on my face when Darius guice saw himself on the big screen and started dancing after the SECCG win, and gather all my friends and family around to watch Joe obviously win the Heisman and got a lil teary eyed lol. I'm a softy. But I rememeber right when we shut alabama down, I knew it. I knew we would win it all. I had no doubt whatsoever, this team was unbeatable. Magical year, when my kids get older we will sit down in the off-season and watch a game every Saturday so they can see what the best team to ever exist looks like. That said, I obviously can't credit 2003 as the GOAT year, 2019 was just beautiful. It's so satisfying to know not a single one of those national championship teams from bama could have ever taken down the fighting tigers of '19.

Not counting interim coaches and the jury is still out on BK but every LSU coach since Nick won a natty and one of them took us to the championship twice. Not denying he will is one of the great HC's of the modern era BUT ... LSU and the talent in the state of LA has had something to do with the team's success. Go Tigers!!!

Talent AND a good coaching staff will win. Starting with Dinardo and more so under Saban, keeping La talent home was key.

Nick Saban is the GOAT college football coach and every LSU fan should be grateful for his time in Baton Rouge. Sure, his departure was shitty, but LSU wouldn't be what it is today without Nick Saban.

Is this a surprise though? Which do you remember more - the girl you lost your virginity to or the 5th girl?

My dad sprung for tickets to that 2003 game because he never thought he’d see it again. Glad we have witnessed two more and hope to watch a few more with him.
