This is a FANTASTIC read and should tell you everything you need to know as to why the 2019 defense played better late in the year and why. I never saw PQ as this “Alpha Dog” kinda guy on defense. I did see him learning under Aranda.
It is really about staying in school and learning your assignments.
The culture means everything. I sure hope the next DC can really bring a different culture that is about staying, getting an education and going on to the NFL.

Its the difference between lsu and the rest. NFLSU is nice but it doesn’t win you championships consistently because its a constant rebuild.

Aranda’s videos/quotes were telling.

It’s just how kids think nowadays. It’s a “me not we” culture.

What gets me is they will get mad and quit from being busted in a piss test, yet it is the university’s fault. Crazy to me the disregard to the concept of “Team”.

What he saw is the difference between a 5 star at LSU knowing the NFL is 3 years away and a 2-3 star from Wisconsin grinding for an opportunity in 5 years. If you go to an SEC school most likely you’re going to the NFL. You will get a shot just based off of going to LSU.

That’s fine and dandy but Let’s see how successful aranda is at Baylor without those type players

I will give aranda credit for our lb play
It’s as good as it’s ever been at LSU under his tutelage
But that’s the way he designed it
We lost out on some top dl prospects because of it

All I know is Wisconsin should have beaten LSU both times they played. I have no idea why Melvin Gordon wasn’t allowed to play that game because he wasn’t hurt. Crist was a dumbass. Wisconsin’s defense was superior both games.

Great article. That wasn’t the culture at LSU in 2005 when Les got here, and I don’t even think it was the culture at LSU in 2010-2011, but at some point after that became the culture under Les and O is either unable or unwilling to change it.

We all know that college athletics is all about money. Money has changed the game and expectations from these players. What can I get if I come here a few years. I’m playing against Bama and I’m gonna be on TV every week. Then I go Pro because I’m from LSU.

Prime examples of this:

Danielle Hunter was probably the greatest failure of a coaching staff to a player. Terrible what Chavis and Co did to this guy. Complete disservice.

Danielle has 54.5 sacks at the age of 26.

5 full seasons and he missed the full 2020 season.

4.5 sacks in 3 years at LSU. Just painful

I’d like to see the entire context, but after reading the entire quotes, Idk what Aranda expected, these are still “kids” coming into a program, if a coach is shocked by having to communicate and “teach” kids with drastically wide range athletic abilities differently, then maybe they’re in the wrong profession?

It’s no different than a middle school or high school teacher having to differentiate their lessons to the kids with different academic aptitude’s in their classes. You only focus on dumbing it down for kids at the low end, then the smarter kids are bored and disinterested, and Vice versa.

It was interesting watching this videos and shows how Dave was able to adapt to coaching a whole different type of player.

I missed hearing him end sentences with “man”

Maybe he was expecting kids to respect what the coaches were trying to do by asking a lot of questions instead of just wanting out of the room. Aranda wanted players with a certain aptitude ie football IQ like he had at Wisconsin. His defenses were complicated and when run correctly were very very good.
