Why doesn’t LSU play Tulane in football?

Looking at our future schedule, we are obviously willing to schedule tough opponents - Texas, Clemson, Oklahoma - and in-state opponents - McNeese St., ULM, and Nicholls St. - but why is Tulane no longer an active rivalry? Have the schools been unable to agree to terms, or is there one unwilling to play the other?

Interesting topic 5 minutes after the CFP rankings just came out.

We only play other state schools in Tiger Stadium. Tulane wants LSU to return a home game.

Tulane wants to be treated like a Texas or OU.
they want a “home” game (played at the Dome), and the gate and ticket sales as if THEY were the reason the Dome sold out.

It's not worth it. It's just a payoff for Tulane. It has zero beneficial value for LSU.

We used to play Tulane the last game of every season. Tulane was in the SEC. Their program languished, then surged again, then slid. The games got rougher--ie., fights. In one game the action stopped as the entire south end of the field was full of fights and brawls. It went on forever until police and coaches got order. After that LSU got less enthused with the game and then dropped Tulane.

Tulane wanted a home-away setup, basically using the LSU fan base to fill their AD coffers by 90% LSU fans filling the Super Dome every other year.

The game-ending brawls were not just a recent phenomenon. My late uncle who played for Tulane in the 1930's used to tell me stories--with a big grin on his face--of similar endings to their games back then.

We played Tulane just a few years ago...and again in 2006.

Yeah, get ahold of Pete Finney's old book on LSU football. He has a pic from that era of when Tiger Stadium was surrounded by sugarcane fields, showing how the fans ran out to pull up cane reeds after the game to beat the hell out of each other on the football field with.

Because Tulane brings nothing to the table deserving a home and home series.
LSU has offered to renew the series as long as it’s played in Tiger Stadium. Tulane thinks they can do better, so more power to them. Let them do better. In the meantime we alternate an appearance in Death Valley amongst other state schools. And LSU is currently ranked #1 in the land, while Tulane’s program is just rank!

Because they wanted to play home and home series and the home team would keep all revenue from the game. I don’t remember who our AD was at the time but he laughed at them because Tulane was still playing their home games in the dome. They averaged a few thousand fans a game. When they played LSU the game would sell out. Our AD said that dog won’t hunt

Tulane claims that LSU owes them a game in the Dome re the last K that Skip signed.
I'm an old guy who remembers Tulane being our natural rival. If you go to their web sites, they know they will not get a 1 for 1 & being that they are Tulane, they think they are too good to accept 2 or 3 for 1. Usually they can draw maybe 12 or 13K. They got 20K last week when neither LSU or the Saints played & it was a beautiful day. To sell out the dome, LSU will need to bring 40K+. Can't see LSU giving up a home sell out for a maybe pay day against a AAC Tulane, even if it would be a rent a win.

I"d much rather play Tulane then the other in state weaklings. Yeah, I get it. They are assholes but WTF. It's like another home game in NOLA. Play them, damnit.

The real reason is because Tulane is greedy.
When we played in New Orleans, Tulane made it so the LSU ticket was only available to season ticket holders. So, in order to get a ticket (outside of the standard allotment) was to buy a full set of season tickets.
LSU fan base complained for years, they refused to budge, and the series was canceled.

September 24, 2007 BATON ROUGE -- "The LSU Tigers will wear special uniforms for its game against Tulane on Saturday as part of an effort to assist the Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts in New Orleans.
The uniforms will feature purple jerseys with a special emblem emblazoned on the shoulders, with white helmets and white pants.
All merchandise is available online at LSUshop.net or at the LSU Athletics Gift Center.
Nike has introduced a set of limited edition jerseys and other apparel with part of the proceeds from sales earmarked for assisting the youth of New Orleans. Worn by both teams, the uniforms will feature a special pelican emblem designed by Nike. The Pelican emblem is a tribute to the state bird and stylistically resembles the Phoenix, a symbol of the City's rebirth. The emblem will be one of several new additions to Nike's LSU and Tulane products, which will be on sale at the game and in select retail locations throughout the US. Proceeds from the sale of this product will go towards Nike's Let Me Play New Orleans fund to help rebuild New Orleans through Sport.
“It's a wonderful thing for Nike to step up and show the want and desire to sponsor this game and to get behind an event that will bring a great deal of attention to an area that was so adversely affected by Hurricane Katrina,” LSU coach Les Miles said. “This is just another example of Nike's commitment to the people, especially the youth, of New Orleans and surrounding areas as they continue to rebuild this wonderful city.
“We are excited and honored to be a part of this game and to do our part in continuing to raise awareness of the work that still remains in helping restore New Orleans.”
Nike has announced plans to expand their long-term commitment to New Orleans youth with a series of projects including ReUse-A-Shoe drives, Nike Grind court donations and limited-edition product sales in partnership with the Greater New Orleans Foundation.
Events will begin Sept. 29 at the LSU/Tulane college football game in the New Orleans Superdome where Nike will introduce limited edition jerseys."
