Why don’t college outfielders use TWO HANDS to catch a fly ball!?!

This might be a “get off my lawn” cranky old man post, but I don’t understand for the life of me why college outfielders don’t use two hands to catch the doggone ball. I figured Dugas would use both hands to secure the ball on the next fly hit to him, but nope. One hand again. My Daddy would’ve had me running laps until I couldn’t breathe if I’d done that. I just don’t get it. /end rant

This isn't t ball dude. That "use two hands" stuff is for amateurs. It's not the best way to catch a fly ball, and really shouldn't be taught at any level.

I'd say at this level, you'd have the ball hit your free hand more often than you'd save a drop. It doesn't really seem to help outside Little League IMO

Absurd, and the dropped fly ball that allowed runs to score begs to differ. Had he used the free hand to secure the ball, it wouldn’t have been dropped.

He just read the ball wrong and it hit the heel of his glove that's all it really comes down to

I disagree. Bringing the second hand in immediately after the ball hits the glove in order to secure the ball doesn’t put the second hand in a position to be hit. It also speeds up the transfer of the ball to the throwing hand.

I agree that’s what happened. However, bringing his other hand in to secure the ball could’ve prevented the drop.

If he has his hand at the bottom of his kit the ball would have jammed his finger. The issue was the ball came into the mitt too low.

They are amateurs.

Because anyone who has played baseball knows that is for little league when kids all have shitty gloves from academy and it’s harder to close than an Alabama sorority girls legs during family weekend

My step brother, who played D1, taught me to play baseball as a kid-high school and he taught me to use both hands
As did every coach I had including one who played in the minors
I am curious as to your logic though
Mine was never that it helped you catch, but rather that it allowed you to get the ball out of your glove quicker to make a throw

Then why don't you see anybody do it?

You aren’t catching it with two hands though you are catching it with the glove and the glove and the throwing hand come together to exchange the ball and make a throw quickly. It’s all in one motion when there is runners on the bags. That’s how I was always taught, never was taught to stick my hand by the glove and use my hand to trap the ball or some shite in my glove. To each their own I guess

It is.
No one really uses two hands to catch it at this level, but they’ll bring the throwing hand near the glove to start the transfer, depending how they’re taught.
In the specific case of Dugas tonight, a second hand wouldn’t have done anything to help - the ball damn near hit him in the wrist. Any free hand is going to be near the webbing. Watch Crews catch it. His hand is near, but it’s not there to close the glove like in little league, it’s there to grab the ball.

It's amazing how every baseball season, people on this board out themselves as non-baseball people by trying to sound like they are hardcore baseball people.

Baseball isn't a difficult sport to understand if you've played it and watched it all your life, but there are a lot of posters who try to act like it's some mystical, complex undertaking that's known only by members of the secret society. It's not.
There are many, many more posters who think they know football, but don't.

Because 1 hand looks cooler and playing college baseball is just about getting as much pussy as possible

Because most folks, post-coach's pitch, would like to finish the play with two unbroken hands?

I love that so many people are popping in with their gotcha “no one uses two hands” comments. It’s literally a fundamental taught at every level and is the preferred method of catching a fly ball if you have a choice.

Aaron Hill was never able to shake the bad habit he learned during tee ball!
