The whiplash from China tariffs will be a bit like Covid shutdown according to this CEO

The entire tweet is worth reading.

That's what the CEO's of HD. TGT, and WMT communicated to Trump a few days ago.

Guy tweeting that is quite dramatic in his prose.

Maybe, but he’s not completely off base. I’ve mentioned a couple of times on here that a couple of weeks before “liberation day”, which was around the time Trump was posturing about 200% tariffs on wine, I was talking to a friend who imports wine from Cyprus. He was telling me that he couldn’t put wine on a boat that would take 30 days to get here if he didn’t know what he was going to have to pay to get it off the boat, as there was no guarantee of an “on the water” exception (there ended up not being one). So, he held all imports to the US. Just one small anecdote, but anyone who doesn’t think that microcosm was/is playing out all over the world is deluding themselves.

Plus, large retailers start receiving holiday merchandise in July/August. This drags on into the summer and we're all getting a lump of coal in our stockings.

I’m in a somewhat similar position. I’ve got a side business that relies on material from China. Luckily I received a shipment just before the tariffs were supposed to take effect, so I’m good for a few months. However, if the tariffs end up being as significant as what’s been touted, I won’t be ordering more material, and I’ll pause this business until conditions are better.

Empty shelves.

Not ideal for a consumer economy.

Speaking of China.

But, but, but, negotiations are ongoing "daily" according to the White House.

Japan sent a trade delegation to DC to negotiate directly with the Administration regarding tariffs . The Japanese delegation had the authority to negotiate and make binding agreements with regard to trade and reciprocal tariffs.

After 2 days, they met with a low level Administration official who had no knowledge of the trade agreements in place between the US and Japan. That official also told the Japanese delegation he had no authority to bind the Administration.

The Japanese went home.

Around that time (it’s already started to happen) trucking work is going to dry up.

It hasn't made it to I-12 yet. Pretty much every afternoon has "moving walls" of semis running through the split.

Also, this just underscores my stance of how any country which overly depends on another country to manufacture for them are essentially that country's bitch.

Cry me a river. When Change Healthcare got hacked last year, I went 2 months with no insurance payments because United Healthcare cut corners in cybersecurity when they took them over. They still haven't caught up and Biden refused to release funds even though care was still being provided nor did he pressure private insurers to do the same. Mf'ers still owe me $350k from that and another $60-70k in excess tax payments they owe me on appeal (which is coming now after 3 years). Then the mf'er cut us 3% on the way out after 4 previous years in cuts. I get less per visit, procedures, imaging etc than I did in 2005. Time for everyone else to get it broke off in them and share some of the pain.

I’m not looking for sympathy. The amount of $$ I make on this business is minimal, but it’s a service that I needed before I learned how to do it, and one that is not available within 2.5 hours of my city. I’m just stating the reality of the choices that some small business operators are having to consider.

Hopefully, this whole trade war deal fizzles out quickly.

Sorry you got screwed on all that.

I feel like it will. The problem is the same we had last year in healthcare, no one could or would tell us how long the system would be down. I planned on 3 or more months, but many practices (small businesses) and hospitals closed because of it and many more are on the verge of insolvency because of the lingering affects on collections and billing. Aside from a few exceptions, the past 5 years has been hell for small business owners and I'm tired of it.

You've got my curiosity. What could meet that criteria, but only be produced with Chinese goods. Interesting.
