Adam Silver admitted NBA ratings are down this season, but isn’t ready to blame the game’s style of play the other way observers are.

Speaking to the media before Tuesday’s NBA Cup final in Las Vegas—where the Bucks defeated the Thunder—the NBA commissioner acknowledged “ratings are down a bit,” but was quick to point out “cable viewership is down double digits.”

“We’re almost at the inflection point where people are watching more programming on streaming than they are in traditional television,” Silver said. “And it’s a reason why for our new television deals, which will enter into next year, every game is going to be available on a streaming service. And as we move to streaming service, putting aside how the actual game is played on the floor, it’s going to allow us from a production standpoint to do all kinds of things that you can’t do through traditional television.”

Through Saturday’s NBA Cup semifinals, viewership for the league’s games on national TV—ABC, ESPN, and TNT—were down 19% year over year, according to Sports Media Watch. Next year, the NBA will enter the first year of its new media-rights deal, which includes traditional TV packages for ESPN/ABC and NBC, but also a streaming-only package on Amazon Prime Video.

Last month saw a high-water mark for streaming, accounting for nearly half of all TV viewing. According to Nielsen, 42% of all TV viewing in November was on streaming.

Silver said the idea that NBA offenses have become “cookie cutter” and copycat is something the league is looking into, but went short of blaming it all on the high volume of threes teams are taking.

“[The NBA] is having many discussions about the style of basketball being played,” Silver said. “I would not reduce it to a so-called 3-point shooting issue. I think we look more holistically at the skill level on the floor, the diversity of offense, the fan reception to the game, all of the above.

“I think the game is in a great place. … It’s unfair, I think, to the players to lump them into categories as 3-point shooters or a midrange shooter or big man playing under the basket. It’s an amazing game.”

They've got 12 years to work on it

After several months of negotiations, the NBA reached an agreement with ESPN/ABC, NBCU and Amazon Prime Video in a new $76 billion, 11-year contract. The media rights agreement begins with the 2025-26 season and represents an increase of 160% per season compared to the current contract.Jul 29, 2024

There is just no compelling reason to watch the nba right now unless you are a hardcore fan.

We know what teams are good. Everyone with a pulse makes the playoffs. It’s all just twiddling thumbs until the playoffs. And that’s dangerous because people’s interest isn’t a simple on/off switch

Plus . . . the product sucks and every game is functionally a three point contest.

My interest goes as far as how good the pelicans are. They were in the hunt for most of the year last year so as a result I watched a ton of nba. They’re the worst team in the league this year so as a result I’ve watched almost 0 nba lol

Is it bad to enter your new decade long massive deal while rating at down nearly 50% over the previous decade?

Yeah, I figure most people following the nba are watching the games they wanna watch on league pass.

“If you look at other data points, in terms of our business, for example, we’ve just come off the last two years of the highest attendance in the history of this league,” Silver said. “We’re at a point where our social media audience is at the highest of any league and continuing to grow exponentially. So, it’s not a lack of interest in this game.”

Silver pointed out that the NBA isn’t the only league dealing with a decline in traditional television ratings. According to Sports Media Watch, while the ratings for NBA national broadcasts are down 19% compared to the same period last year, men’s college basketball (21%), the NHL (28%), and women’s college basketball (38%) have seen more significant ratings dips. Viewership for college football games has also dropped across all networks this fall, per Sports Media Watch, albeit by single-digit percentages.

“We’re almost at the inflection point where people are watching more programming on streaming than they are in traditional television,” Silver said. “And it’s a reason why for our new television deals, which will enter into next year, every game is going to be available on a streaming service. And as we move to streaming service, putting aside how the actual game is played on the floor, it’s going to allow us from a production standpoint to do all kinds of things that you can’t do through traditional television. All kinds of new functionality, all kinds of new options and screens that are available.”

The NFL relies on gambling and fantasy football, neither is nearly as interesting in the NBA as it is in the NFL.

Immediate cause is probably due to the Lakers being mediocre, but this is a bigger problem than they want to admit, and it's not an easy fix. If you're not a fan of one of the select few, you have no chance and it's impossible to build a league-wide fanbase on that.

NBA fandom has been built on star power for decades now, and the biggest star just isn't that remarkable anymore and the second biggest star basically only shoots three pointers. The rest are Europeans. It's become horribly boring and they don't have a legitimate team-fandom (outside of a few) to fall back on like the NFL

NBA fantasy is pretty bad but gambling is better than NFL. You get the equivalent of an NFL Sunday noon slate 3 times per week and then also have games every single day (except during this nba cup stuff)

I'm not surprised that this bubble is bursting. Superstars are aging out with no clear replacements, the regular season is too long, injuries ruin too many seasons for too many teams, guys don't give consistent effort in the regular season, too many teams make the playoffs, and games start too late for central and east coast time zones.

Very well said. The nba is a star driven league. Who is the Face of the nba??

Morant is a great player, but his off court stuff and being in Memphis keeps him down. Edwards is must see but is stuck in minny.

There are a ton of people that feel this way. It’s their own fault for letting the contracts get crazy like they are.

It's just boring af and not compelling at all. Nothing brings you in to want to watch a game and it feels like half the players in the league are only there for a paycheck. Game 26 on the 82 game schedule? Who gives af

The owners that need to fill out an arena 41+ times a year. Are you new to sports? We don't need 162 baseball games either but you can sell a lot more seats and nachos that way

Maybe we need a Less Sports Board to talk about cutting the seasons in half.
