Darren McFadden and the 2006 Heisman

I heard on the radio earlier today that Troy Smith got like 85% of the votes in 2006.
I understand that Smith had a great season on the team that was number one going into the championship game, but McFadden was quite clearly the best skill position player on a BCS team. He basically carried an otherwise mediocre Arkansas team to the SEC championship game. Was the reasoning just that he was an underclassman? Bc Tebow won it the next season as a soph iirc

Update: Troy Smith received 86.7% of the Heisman votes, which was a record until Burrow today. Unfathomable to me

Keep in mind as well that this was before the SEC takeover of the title game. '06 votes would have been while the media was still pushing for OSU/Mich rematch in the title game because they were "clearly" the 2 best teams and it wasn't close.

True, just the vote totals astound me. I guess Arkansas not exactly being a media Mecca didn't help

mcfadden should have won that year. troy smith was an above average college player that just happened to be on the #1 team in the country. darren mcfadden was a force of nature.

At the time, the narrative was no sophomore would win the Heisman.
Tim tebow won it the next year.

There was an anti-SEC bias in the Heisman trophy really up until about Mark Ingram or so.
There were about half a dozen programs the trophy went to by default if there wasn't a clear cut #1 choice and none of them in the SEC.
And don't get me started on Woodson over Manning

Remember it like yesterday. All these idiots on tv kept repeating and harping on how McFadden was a sophomore and Shouldnt win.
Then the next year all they said was "Darren McFadden is probably the best player in college football, but Tim Tebow deserves the Heisman."
I remember their argument was because Tebow was the first guy to ever run for so many TDs and throw for so many TDs.
That was also the year Florida only went like 8-4.
McFadden not winning the Heisman is perhaps the greatest travesty in a long long history of Arkansas Football's cursed history.

When they introduced Troy Smith I had to think of who he was. Crazy that the won by that big of a margin and was nothing special.

Arkansas also did a really shitty job of marketing McFadden in 2006. I don't think they knew what they had until it was too late.
The Ohio State - Michigan 1 vs 2 ordeal was also the biggest storyline in the country that whole month of November and into December.

You don’t win Heismans with 42 yards against USC, 71 against Vandy, 65 Miss, 84 miss st
, and and 73 against Florida.

Hillis never did much in college. 347 was his best season

Yeah, and it seemed like he got almost all of it in that one game vs. LSU.
