Did Greg Gumbel piss off the wrong person at CBS?

Went from their #1 play by play to near the bottom. He’s still the best, or no worse than their 2nd best pbp man. Did something happen?

He’s not what he used to be baw

He was replaced by James Brown years ago in the studio and took over the #2 play by play spot. They have slowly moved him down the ladder. I think he’s good.

He's really old.

Nantz and Eagle are better. So he’s at best third.

Most underrated PBP man of our time

I always thought it was weird how James Brown was the main studio guy at FOX then hopped to CBS to be the same.

I would put Harlan behind Nantz and Eagle as well

Probably was either money and/or he hated broadcasting from the West Coast when he was probably living in the East or NYC area.
The weirdest thing about that whole situation was Fox then going out and getting a low-rent version of Brown in Kurt Menefee.

Completely forgot about Harlan. He’d definitely be third.

Funny enough I heard something on local radio about him this week. He made a ton of mistakes. Just factual errors like it’s his first carry of gave, but was 10th.

He's 76. Not as sharp as he used to be.

I’ll always remember Gumble as being the main TV commentator for LSU’s first baseball NC in 1991.

When I see Gumble, my mind thinks of eating gumbo on a Sunday. Don’t know why ?

Greg Gumbel is March Madness to me. Always look forward to hearing him read the brackets on Selection Sunday

Versatile broadcaster. Not unprecedented for broadcasters to slide down the ladder as they age.

The weirdest thing to me is that Curt Menefee is a Sigma Nu.

quote:. I was surprised when he got the job, but Kurt had pretty good experience for someone his age. He'd worked in smaller cities, then Dallas then NY, before working for Fox. I was surprised he made the jump to NY too. Pretty sure he was let go by Channel 11 in Dallas, then boom, he's doing TV in NY.

By the time they hired him for the big show on Fox, he'd kind of done the same thing for the the USFL games by himself. They probably didn't have to pay him much, and they hired from within.
When he was in Dallas he was friendly, but came across as kind of a quiet, just there to do his job, guy. I talked to him while waiting for the players to come back to their lockers after Mavs games. He was the only anchor that came to more than just the lid lifter, and playoff games.
