Has it ever been explained why the Stanford band came onto the field in a game at Cal?

Everytime I'm reminded of the play in 1982 (Gameday just ran a feature on it) , I always wonder why the band came on the field in a road game.

They thought it was over.
Stanford’s band isn’t a typical band. They’re legit trouble makers. Research their antics. They’re somewhat legendary.

It still doesn't explain why they came on the field to perform for a road game.

Stanford’s band used to do post game concerts on the road. That’s what they were preparing for.

The band used to travel to road games a lot and do post game concerts.
The game was also a big rivalry game for the Stanford Axe so it was allowed. If the home team oks it, it’s fine.
Would be similar to LSU band going on the field at Arkansas for The Boot.
Bands just don’t do many away games anymore.

With today's "quality" refs, how many flags would have been thrown on that play today?

It's a good bet drugs were involved.

i was just thinking how with todays refs, rules and replay how the Stanford/Cal band ending wouldn’t have been near as exciting due to the whistles and pauses and replay etc

Same reason Kentucky fans were rushing the field as Jack Hunt scored the game winning touchdown in 2002.

I'm not questioning why they thought the game was over, that's not hard to figure.
My question, which has since been answered, was why the road band was scheduled to perform at all at the end of the game.

I was there that day. Senior year at Cal. Many Cal players in my fraternity. (To get this out of the way for the Political Talk board, we only had two registered democrats in my fraternity.)
As others have said, Stanford's obnoxious band played post-game even on the road. They were already in position to do that. The band, like half of us in Memorial Stadium, thought the play was over after it appeared that Richard Rogers was down.
Good thing the officials got the call right:)
Fun fact: to their credit the Stanford student newspaper publishers put out and distributed a fake, special edition "Daily Californian," the Cal student newspaper. The fake paper very convincingly had a story that Pac-10 officials had met after the game, overruled the game officials, and awarded victory to Stanford.

Well those quality of refs back then missed about 3 play altering things.

Because they are a disgrace not only to their university, but music education as a whole.

From google:
The Stanford Marching Unit (LSJUMB) has been involved in many antics over the years, including:
1970
During a nationally televised halftime show, the band members dropped their pants to reveal surf-themed underwear.
1972
The band was banned from Disneyland after attempting to take their microphones onto the Storyland Canal boat ride.
1975
The band created the "HearstBurger" formation, which consisted of two buns and no patty, to mock the Patty Hearst kidnapping.
1986
The band was suspended from playing at the UCLA football game after incidents earlier that year, including alleged on-field urination.
1989
Before a game against USC, the Stanford Tree mascot was toilet-papered by the USC Trojan Marching Band.
1990
The band was suspended for a game after their halftime show at the University of Oregon criticized logging in the northwest United States.
1994
During a game against USC, the band drove a white Ford Bronco with bloodstained handprints around the Stanford Stadium track to mock USC alumnus O.J. Simpson.
1999
During a game against UCLA, the band formed a handicapped-parking symbol and rolled the Tree out in a wheelchair.

They skipped them getting in trouble for the halftime show at BYU talking about how marriage is love between a man and a woman… and a woman… and a woman… and a woman…

It's not like they had to charter a plane to make that transcontinental trip from Palo Alto to Berkeley. It's a rivalry game between two teams fifty miles apart from each other. Both bands probably play sometime during the game and maybe the band of the winning team plays after the game and they just jumped the gun.
