How Raygun made it to the Olympics and divided breaking world

When breaker Rachael Gunn – aka Raygun – bombed out of the Paris Olympics, the shockwaves hit a tiny hip-hop scene on the other side of the world.
In a Sydney warehouse-turned-community centre, breakers warm up with ab exercises that would make a Pilates teacher cry, before taking to the floor with acrobatic moves so intricate you can barely make them out.
It is one of the most important events of the year – a qualifier for the Red Bull BC One World Finals – and the past week weighs heavy.
A few people nervously glance at the handful of cameras lining the dance circle, their minds no doubt flashing to images of Gunn which have set the internet alight.
“I feel like it's just pushed our scene in Australia into the Dark Ages,” Australian hip-hop pioneer Spice told the BBC.
Gunn, a 36-year-old university lecturer, lost all three of her Olympic battles in viral fashion, her green tracksuit and unorthodox routine – which included the sprinkler and kangaroo-inspired hopping – generating waves of memes and abuse.
The fallout has divided and disappointed the Australian breaking community.
This should be on the Olympics board, which sadly and inexplicably made an early exit.

Should’ve stopped reading there.

Raygun is a ray of sunshine in a dark and bleak world. Australia should consider her a national treasure.

Not everything needs a community. Just like not every sports team has a nation.
When Eddie the Eagle made a mockery of ski jumping because there was no minimum Olympic standards to meet and every country could send at least 1 competitor....was there a "ski jumping community" that was devastated?
Breakdancing, best thing to happen to the Olympics so we could move on from this bloated dinosaur introducing "shows" and "events" to stay relevant.
Wonder how the Katie Ledecky and Sydney McLaughlin feel that a break dancer has the same gold by ounce.

Seemed that way. I thought the vibe and energy was great. I wish every day and every board was like that one.

Oh NOOOOOOOOO! The "breaking world" is divided. I certainly hope the recent actions don't destroy it!!!!

Chicken got screwed on a timing error on the downhill in Sarajevo that cost him a podium spot, so he's been (rightfully) a bit salty ever since...

Ironically, breaking sucked so bad that without her no one would be talking about it. They should stfu.

I can see the real breakdancers being bothered by the Raygun thing. There's some incredible strength, balance and athleticism in it. You don't think so, try it. Raygun made a mockery of it. Lucky there wasn't an asskicking involved. That said, I watched none of it and didn't care to.
