What are the recent years of ratings for College Gameday?

I may be wrong but I think I remember seeing they’ve had some of the best years ever since adding Mcafee and Saban

The worst way to do this. We don’t even get a farewell episode?

They're doing a farewell episode week 1, August 30

LSU @ Clemson
Texas @ Ohio State
Bama @ Florida State

I'm guessing it would be one of those 3. Ohio State is where the headgear tradition was born. Florida State is Corso's alma mater. So both of those game sites would have an extra sentimental angle.

That’s an insult to pre-stroke Corso. Corso actually did his homework and knew what he was talking about most of the time

Prime 1990s/early-mid 00s Corso was Bobby The Brain Heenan level good. He was essentially the first troll, but also a babyfaced hero. Smooth talking, quick witted, and charisma everywhere. The last 10 yrs/post strike have really made audiences forget just how good he was. Pre-Desmond/Pre-Rinaldi College GameDay was the best product ESPN ever produced.

Corso, you're stupid

I’ve always thought the fall in quality of Gameday was a microcosm of the sport itself. Over saturated, mindless fluff, that turned into an entertainment product instead of an actual football show.

What they allowed him to do these past 5 years is nothing short of tragic in terms of how an entire generation now sees him.

It's probably what has kept Corso, alive, though. Being that he will be 90 in August, I could see him going out quickly like Bear Bryant and Joe Paterno once football was no longer in their lives.

I had no problem at all with him being on show last few years. It wasn't like he was on set for the full 3 hours.

There won’t be many dry eyes on his last Gameday appearance.

Precisely. Just like with millions of other things in life, it started small, got mega popular, grew to enormous heights, but then was not even close to being what made it popular to begin with. Kinda like CFB itself these days..

I don' know why you were downvoted since you're 100% correct.

Both of you are getting downvoted because he’s not there to be good.

He’s there because he was transcendent for the sport and earned the right to go out on his own terms.

EDIT: And I’ll add that your post is indicative of one of the problems with CFB today. It’s all about entertainment and money now. That’s it. Tradition and history are getting thrown in the trash can…kinda like what you want to do with Corso.

Yes...WAS. Nobody could ever deny that. Truly a legend of his time. For real.

False. Being a legend doesn't give you a free pass to just go on until you keel over on stage. I mean with that logic, what if he didn't want to stop this year? What if he stayed another 10 years from now? If they had to bring him out in a wheelchair and he literally couldn't mumble any coherent sentences that'd be totally ok with you because of what he did 40 years prior?

corso is a geriatric that can hardly speak and has to be propped up (physically!) by his coworkers. It's a pathetic display to keep rolling him out like some kind of circus sideshow.

I am in favor of actual history and tradition remaining in CFB, but rolling out a nursing home patient isn't that.

ETA: who is even the market for corso? The only people constantly singing his praises are older folsk like us that grew up wathcing him on gameday. But we like him for the nostalgia factor. The young folks of today look at Mcaafee as the wacky zany guy like we looked at corso, the younger people today probably couldn't care less abotu corso. So the only people actually really tuning in for the guy are really only doing it because they remember liking him 20 years ago.

He will surely come back for at least one episode next season for a big farewell.

And I get the feeling he'll make a random appearance or two every year going forward as long as he's physically able.

Good you couldn’t understand him half the time. It’s a shame they kept bringing him out when he was clearly incoherent half the time

They already said he would be on the week 1 episode of Gameday for his final episode and big send off.

Doubt it. He’ll be 90 by the start of this season and he’s barely able to do it as it is currently. Maybe he’ll do a pre-recorded segment from home once in a while for special occasions, like a headgear pick for a national title game. But I can’t imagine he’s got enough gas in the tank to still be able to travel for occasional appearances after his big farewell August 30

ESPN has slowly been decreasing his role and commentary…you’re making it sound like he was providing 50% of the content like he did 20 years ago. He has been on set only a fraction of the time he used to be. I’m not arguing that he needed to continue. I’m just baffled that the guy putting on some head gear and talking for 5 minutes in a three hour segment has been such a problem for so many people.

Again, I’m not making any argument that he should have continued. I’m answering your question as to why you got DVs when your first response to his retirement announcement was “dude sucked for ten years”.

This goes to my point. CFB is now about marketability. McAfee is what’s “in” now, but just look at the differences between the two men. Corso’s shtick was all football, he was a football guy before anything else. McAfee is a personality and is using football as a platform on which to perform. And he’s honestly no different that the players, coaches and programs who are simply trying to use football to get paid.

If that’s what the majority of “fans” want, it is what it is I guess.

I feel Bama@FSU is a longshot, but if they slot it as a noon game and allow Gameday to finish with Corso planting the spear...that would be pretty cool.

Doubt it’ll be a noon game based on the lack of other games that day with 2 high profile programs to fill the prime time slots, but Corso planting the spear or being FSU’s honorary captain for the coin toss would be cool

I feel it will be 3:30, LSU/Clemson in prime time and I don’t think ESPN/ABC wants to compete with itself but putting FSU/Bama on ESPN vs the other on ABC.

I’d like it to be an Ohio state Oregon game. Don’t care which one he puts on, but those are the two I’d like to see.
