“The recent post about Bobby Bonila reminded me that he's not the only player that's still being paid by a former team years after he retired...here is a list of players still being paid in 2023 by their former teams.
Ken Griffey Jr. - $3.6m Cincinatti Reds
Chris Davis - $9m Baltimore Orioles
Alex Cobb - $4.5m Baltimore Orioles
Darren O'Day - $1m Baltimore Orioles
Manny Ramirez - $2m Boston Red Sox
Dustin Pedrioia - $2m Boston Red Sox
Todd Helton - $1.3m Colorado Rockies
Vinny Castilla - $100k Colorado Rockies
Jacob de Grom - $12m deferred from 2023 salary by New York Mets
Bobby Bonilla - $1.2m New York Mets
Brett Saberhagen - $250k New York Mets
Matt Holiday - $1.5m St. Louis Cardinals
Max Scherzer - ~$2m Washington Nationals
The Mets also paid Johan Santana until 2020
And in perhaps the biggest fleece of all time, the Braves paid Bruce Sutter until 2022, the year he died (the last payment was a lump sum of $9m...the actual value of the contract). Sutter pitched there the last 3 years of his career (85, 86, 88), made a total of 40 saves, and the Braves averaged 96 losses per year. They ended up paying him $47m for a $9m contract - $38m was interest.”

Might as well add Strasburg to that list because his career has been over since 2019.

That contract will go down as the worst in sports history.
$250 million for basically nothing.

Well he was WS MVP…they could’ve given that money to Rendon and basically been in the same boat.

Saberhagen got to the Majors in 1984. His last ML season was in 2001 He is getting 250 thousand dollars
Bobby Bonilla started playing MLB in 1986. His last ML season was in 2001. He is getting 1.19 million dollars through 2035, which is included in this list but he also has another deferred payment of 500K through 2029 that is funded by the Mets & Orioles jointly. I could live on that

Bonilla is getting 1.19m through 2035 from the Mets (started in 2011) but is also getting another 500k for the Mets and Orioles jointly through 2029 (began in 2004).

The Bonilla stuff deserves an asterisk next to it.
It not only is stupid today, but it was stupid at the time because the Mets decided it was cheaper to invest that money then pay interest down the road than to pay it off immediately.
Their investment guy? Bernie Madoff.

Is a better color announcer than relief pitcher, and he was a pretty good relief pitcher at times.
