It seems like this year more than most there are some really fast times. My son is a sophomore this year so I am following more closely than usual.

A couple of fast times recorded below were early in the season.

1:51 800m
4:16 1600m

Not to count the kid from Parkview ran in Virginia a 8:49 3200m recently and
I believe he came out 9th. I would love to see him run against the record holder from Jesuit but I believe they are in different divisions.

Looking forward to the regionals and state.

Faster tracks, faster shoes, more knowledge of how to incorporate supplements. Kids are definitely faster, but I don't think they're so much faster than what we've seen in the past.

Even pro runners have talked about how insane high school times are now. Tech is getting better, we aren't running kids into the ground anymore because the knowledge of training has improved a lot.

on average kids are slower overall but the top kids are much faster in general than 10/20/30+ years ago

the advances in training and the tech to measure and adjust has made a huge difference

we were always really able to train acceleration portion but until recently it was really hard to measure and until recently we really couldn't train elasticity because we could not measure it to quantify it.

the old saying....what can be measured can be tracked and what can be tracked can be improved....that 100% rings true in track

I don't know man. The 3200 meter state record was from 1996 with a time of 9:08. Jesuit kid broke it last year with a time of 8:48. That's a lot faster!

it stood for alot of years
the jesuit kid is just a freak and doesn't mean all of a sudden 1000s of kids are going to break it

with Tony Hollier making the "feed the cats" style programming so popular....it has gotten so much better

coaches are actually starting to understand energy system demands and that true speed training....requires rest. so gotten much better

Dang, what’re they running the 400m in?

Son ran that for a bit. Not sure he ever got under 50 seconds officially, he was a freshman and won district…I think that time was 52. Had better splits in the 4x400 for some reason.

I think 4 kids have already broken 4 in the mile indoors this year. Kid from DFW has gone 1:46.8 for 800 indoors this year.

Right I meant if you took away the super shoes and fast tracks. LA had a kid run 8:40s in the 70s.

I'm more knowledgeable about Texas since I ran HS here and live here. It's not only the top few kids, but the depth of talent. I was a top 10 HS distance runner in Texas but if I ran my same times now, I wouldn't be top 10 in my region much less the state. Even if I subtracted time to account for shoes I wouldn't be top 10 in my region.

Top 6 went under 1:57 in the 800.
4:25 mile was disappointing. Catholic high meet

I dunno. There was a time in late 70s and early 80s where there were some really fast times. Bobby Beck from Salmen ran mile times around 4:07. Keith Iovine ran 1600 m in 4:12 which may still be the record. Several
others were running 4:20s in 1600 / 9:20s in 3200.

It’s always intrigued me that for decades kids seemed slower especially in distances. It has been quite recently the times have caught and are now surpassing that peak 40+ years ago. Seems like it wouldn’t have taken this long.

feed the cats is a fricking joke of a training program. Tony hollier is a massive fricking douche bag to boot.

99% of high schoolers still can't accelerate past 10 meters properly. 95% cannot properly accelerate past 3 steps at the angle and force off the ground required to accelerate at those angles.

Not really something that needs to be measured just continuously taught and reinforced via step patterns and drills. It's a long forboding process which is why it's easily given up on for other quicker fixes

Stephanie Harmon, LaGrange HS (96-00) was a shot put champion indoor and outdoor a couple of years.

Should be HOF, imo.
