Interesting timing indeed.

quote:
Founded in 1900, the AAU seeks, according to its mission statement, to “collectively help shape policy for higher education, science and innovation; promote best practices in undergraduate and graduate education; and strengthen the contributions of leading research universities to American society.” Membership is by invitation only and based on an extensive set of quantitative indicators and qualitative judgments that assess the breadth and quality of a university’s research and graduate and undergraduate programs.
Five other universities — Arizona State University; George Washington University; the University of California, Riverside; the University of Miami; and the University of South Florida — also were added to the AAU membership roll today, joining the association’s previous 65 U.S. and Canadian members.

Ok that is interesting considering the public opinion of those institutions, especially Arizona State.

It's about research and not about undergraduate education or undergraduate admission standards. ASU has been pulling in a lot of money research wise for some sometime now as is USF. People think of USF as a direction school like East Carolina, but it has grown tremendously in research the last 30 years. They can both say they are part of an exclusive collection of universities with Harvard, Chicago, and Hopkins now.

Considering the way that academic blue bloods like Berkeley talk about it, you would think it was Chico State.

LSU should have been in the AAU. Until the 1940s LSU was up there with Texas, North Carolina, and Virginia as public universities in the South. LSU was on a trajectory of being an AAU institution. Louisiana lost its way and stopped supporting LSU the same way other Southern states like Texas and North Carolina did.

I wonder what the economic differences are between Texas and North Carolina vs LA?

This. More specifically, it's all about federal grant money. For example, USF's med school brings in a top 50 level of R&D; hence, the quality of their faculty basically got the rest of the university admitted.
The real surprise is UC-Riverside. The AAU must have readjusted their metrics in a way that gives some weight to factors (other than R&D) that help UCR, Notre Dame, Miami, and Arizona State. My best guess is that those institutions have a lot of faculty who are fellows of esteemed academies.

This was one of the hurdles required to get into the B1G so I wouldn’t be surprised if they get offers. Notre dame is a natural fit, and it makes sense for the B1G to finally get into the Florida tv market

Wrong (as usual). We've been AAU since the 80s.

Who gets invited on the east coast? Gotta think that Oregon and Washington are B10 bound. But then there's that pesky ACC GOR.

The fight against the ACC's GOR just got more interesting since ND isn't allowed to join another conference in football until 2036.

Those are only people that have not followed ASU since before Michael Crow got there.
Over the last decade ASU has made pretty great strides to increase its academic reputation.
I don't think we even show up towards the top of any "Party School" lists anymore...

They said two years ago it was basically a requirement to be an AAU school to join the BIG10.
