MLB Blackout Rule

Someone explain this to me with REAL justifiable logic.
Thanks
Thanks

Teams are paid a lot of money for exclusive broadcast rights in nearby territories. Either pay to watch it through a provider or don’t watch.

This doesn't make sense. You can pay, and if you are in the blackout area, you still can't watch.

I will never understand how south Louisiana lost the Astros and instead get the Rangers
It makes no sense

Still have astros. Just have to have direct tv or fubo
Owner wanted the team on his own network

Teams get a shite ton of money from cable providers to air their games
To protect said cable providers, they dont allow non subscribers to have access to those games

It's absurd in practice. There is no justification for blacking out the entire state of Iowa from the White Sox, Cubs, Brewers, Twins, Cardinals, and Royals.
If none of those teams are playing each other, Iowa residents are potentially blacked out from 12 teams, even if they pay for mlb streaming. If a resident pays for a single team, let's say the Angels, they run in to a blackout every time that team plays one of those 6 at home (actually it may be any time they play one of those 6 regardless of location, I can't remember). It's insane. If I live in Council Bluffs, I'm subject to blackout for 6 teams--none of which are within 350 miles of the city. Yet, 12 minutes away in Omaha, I'm subject to only one blackout.
Another example, Fairbanks Alaska is blacked out of Mariners games, despite being a mere 2,140 miles to Seattle.

Exactly. I was going to bite the bullet and get MLB season pass because my cable provider doesn't carry the Astros. Then I found out that even after shelling out more cash, they would still be blacked out.
It's fricking 2024 MLB, adapt or die

It needs to be changed. My father in law lives 3+ hours from Houston and Dallas. He wants to watch the Astros but can't purchase them through the MLB app because he is too close. No coverage in his area because they show the Rangers. He had to change his online streaming to Fubo in order to get the broadcast.

There's all kinds of ridiculous scenarios as well. If I pay for the Twins, and I live in a non-blackout area, and I'm traveling to a blackout area, I can't stream them. I can listen to their radio broadcast though.

If I have a subscription to MLB network and I live in Shreveport, I cannot see Ranger and Astros games. I have paid to see the MLB games and a local provided is not broadcasting them.
My problem is that if I am a Guardians fan, I can't see the Guardians games when the Astros and Rangers play AT Cleveland. What/who are they protecting there?

I do pay. I have MLB package.

Optimum Cable and Bally can't agree on anything, so I lost the Ranger games from my Optimum cable and can't get them or the Astros in Louisiana. The same thing happened with the Diamondbacks a couple of years ago, and MLB is letting people there watch the D'backs on MLB. I think San Diego had a similar setup.I'll be glad when the Bally contract in North Texas runs out. Maybe MLB will let Texas people watch the Rangers then.
Arizona residents can watch D"Backs on MLB for $90/season.

It makes sense in a “Go watch the local channel” sense, but zero fricking sense in that the area goes well beyond who are in the actual local areas.
This is why MLB suffers.

I thought it was to protect ticket sales.

Explain Iowa. If you live in NW Iowa your RSN carries the Twins. NE Iowa the Brewers. Eastern/Central Iowa, the Cubs, White Sox, or Cardinals. SW Iowa the Royals.
If I live in NW Iowa I can only get an RSN with the Twins, yet every single one of those teams claims the state as their territory and are subject to blackout. I know so many people in Iowa that don't even bother with MLB.tv because 6 teams are blacked out in the state and, if they are all playing another team some night, a quarter of the games are blacked out.
So bad the Iowa Legislature may start passing laws.

yep, my wife's whole family are Astros fan and they all either have one or the other and they all watch every Astro game. I'm not even a fan but I have Fubo so I could watch every game if I wanted.

It's strange how North Louisiana get's Astros and Rangers games but South La doesn't.
