Just watched a quarter end with about 19 plays. First drive was 12 plays and just over ten minutes. The majority of the quarter was watching the teams huddled up. Speeding up the game is giving the fans way less football. Play goes out of bounds, stop the clock. There was a holding call and the remainder of the quarter ticked off the clock after the call.

NFL move at the right pace. It’s not college they don’t want these obscene 6 hour slogs that college has become and they’re right to not want that.

This

NFL is a TV sport and CFB is a spectator sport

CFB spectators spend all day sometimes tailgating and partying and so might prefer the event to drag a little longer. Also the student population has less other things to do when their team is playing

No penalties in the game make a huge difference. Sustained drives, completed passes, and no penalties will bleed the clock with quickness in an NFL game.

As of a couple weeks ago the nfl was averaging about 8 plays less per game from my cursory math versus last couple year. The games aren’t really taking less time though as they just added commercials..

Personally, I’ll wait till the end of year before trying to understand the impact but I’m curious if the trend holds throughout

College games are routinely 3 1/2 and 4 hours long, which is 30-60 minutes too long. College also has an incessant amount of replay review to go along with the longer commercial breaks. Thankfully, college got rid of the stupid stopping the clock after a first down rule until late in each half. Everyone bitched about that and not many people noticed it’s gone for the most part.

The NFL pace is just right.

The players probably don’t mind. They’re just gonna add games anyways. At least now there’s a least a few less plays per game.
