Carruth wrote a 15-page letter to Saundra Adams, the mother of Cherica Adams, that was sent to Charlotte television station WBTV. He also spoke at length by phone with the station about the letter, accepting responsibility for the 1999 conspiracy to murder Cherica Adams and expressing interest in gaining custody of their son.

"I'm apologizing for the loss of her daughter. I'm apologizing for the impairment of my son," Carruth told WBTV. "I feel responsible for everything that happened. And I just want her to know that truly I am sorry for everything."

Carruth is scheduled to be released from Sampson Correctional Institution in Clinton, North Carolina, on Oct. 22. He was sentenced to 18 to 24 years in 2001 after being found guilty of hiring Van Brett Watkins and Michael Kennedy to murder Adams. Watkins, who shot Adams multiple times, was sentenced to a minimum of 40 years. Kennedy, who drove the car, was released in 2011.

Adams died a month after the shooting. Her son, Chancellor Lee Adams, was born prematurely and has battled the challenges that come from cerebral palsy, which was the result of his traumatic birth after the shooting.

Carruth, who did not testify at his trial, said he wants custody of Chancellor when he is released.

"I should be raising my son. His mother should be raising her son," Carruth said. "Ms. Adams should not be doing this and I want that responsibility back.

"I feel like he might not ever have his mother in his life but he could still have me and I could still make a difference and I don't think that's anyone's responsibility when I'm still here."

Rae’s up for the chutzpah award on this one.

Kid’s better off without a father than the one who tried to get him aborted via a hit on his mom.

It really pisses me off that this POS is getting out of jail. He should serve the same amount of time as the guy who pulled the trigger

I'm going out on a limb and say that he's unfit to raise the handicapped son that he tried to murder.

Oh, is that how he feels? That’s good to know.

Well you are responsible Rae. Also, that child you almost murdered was raised and although he’s disabled, he’s grown into a man thanks to the mother of the daughter you did kill.

There’s a lot of dads in prison who might deserve a second chance. Rae Carruth doesn’t derserve shite.

Honorable mention goes to the balls to say his mother should be raising him.

Custody?

More like a permanent restraining order.

How the hell would a court allow the son to live with him..."hey Dad, member that time you killed Mom and I almost died too?"

He's gonna have to reach and satisfy a mighty heavy burden for a court to logically grant him this custody

I hope I'm way wrong on this, but I"m going to predict he gets arrested for harassing and threatening the current legal guardian of his son.

Rae Carruth is a POS for what he did. That can't be argued

What he did is done though. The only possible good that can come now, is he is a changed man and can be a part of his sons life, take that burden off that sweet lady who raised him, and talk and mentor other troubled individuals and keep them from making terrible decisions like he did

I am all for Carrith staying in prison for life for what he did. But I can't control that. I can only hope for the absolute best now that everything is done. This story has always haunted me

So you're rooting for a bullet to find Carruth's head the moment he steps out of prison?

I read that and almost lost it.

He feels responsible? Screw him and his F’d up feelings. He IS responsible.

Die slowly and burn in hell Rae.

What if the lady taking care of his son wants the burden of giving him the best life he can have? In that case, the bullet scenario is looking pretty good.
