The abomination that was the logo for the 2008 Pittsburgh SB is what killed the old style logos.
I don't blame them for going generic after this fricking disaster. I'll never forget watching the game and thinking... Why the hell do they have on the Seahawks color scheme?

They actually started moving toward standardization of the SB logo with SB XL in Detroit (2006) with the logos through SB XLIV using the red and blue stars and them using the same font for “Super Bowl” from XLI through XLIV. Beginning with XLV, league management decided that the Lombardi needed to be front and center with respect to the game’s logo.
In 2004, the league got together with Landor Associates (a brand design firm) to work on the NFL’s brand. They created the logos for SB XL and SB XLIII and basically brainwashed the league into feeling like they needed a cohesive brand for the postseason....this also why the conference championship trophies changed and now suck.
