A report citing WNBA sources, including an executive from one of the teams, revealed that despite the league's wall-to-wall coverage, it will still lose $50 million for the 2024 season.

With the basketball association reportedly taking in between $180-$200 million the previous season, it is still just a fraction of the $10 billion+ earned by the NBA.

Given that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said in 2018 that the WNBA loses about $10 million per year, that would amount to at least $200 million and upwards of $260 million in losses since the league's inception in 1997.

The report by the Washington Post detailed that the WNBA is expected to lose $50 million from the current season, citing two unnamed sources who are aware of the financial figures. The sources told the outlet that they did not have permission to publicly discuss the league's financial status.

just find no appeal in watching any professional women's sports. Now can I watch the women's college softball world series or March Madness in Women's college basketball? Yes but watching a full season of a women's sport is a no for me.

the majority of their money is from the TV contracts like every other sport nowadays.

It doesn't expire until next year. they are currently getting $60 million per year and are seeking $100 million more per year.

It's weird that people expect them to make more money this year based off more viewers.

sure they have a couple extra thousand people in the arena, but that isn't gonna make an extra $50 million.

quote:

"The NBA receives about 40% of WNBA revenue, and outside investors—the WNBA raised $75 million from Nike, NBA owners, the NBA itself, and others in 2022—get roughly 20%, leaving the teams and players of the WNBA with about 40% of its revenue, the Post reported. And unlike the NBA, in which players evenly split revenue with team owners after the league office takes its portion, players in the WNBA see less than 10% of total revenue," wrote Flemming.

This is something that will surely improve upon a new media rights deal, which Flemming said could see a bump of over $100 million.

And we traded a terrorist for a lesbian who is a doper....and all the old guard lesbians have been shitting on and physically assaulting Clark even though she brought them Charter flights.

The brain of a militant WNBA lesbian needs to be studied by science to figure out why they are so stupid, as Dave Portnoy said.

This whole Clark fiasco is showing lesbians can't run a business.

And don't understand the power of marketing, when you can exist under the NBA as a welfare queen.... It's all about emotions.

Like I’ve said….it doesn’t matter if every team had a CC, or if one whole team had CC at every position…the WNBA would always lose money. Listed in ratings below NHL, PGA, maybe even PBA

You think they’ll quit losing money after the ink dries on the new TV deal?

So commish was lying? The entire league’s salaries only grew from roughly $7m - $16m

If now-chartered flights ($25m/year per the league) are in the $50m loss that’s still a huge gap

Not so fast my friend.

According to the Sports Business Journal, who did all of this research, the NHL is averaging 373,000 viewers on ESPN and TNT this season. The WNBA, which doesn’t exactly cater to the largest audience imaginable, averaged 352,000 viewers last season.

LINK
That's from February 2023. The WNBA ratings have only gone up since then. The caitlin Clark debut got more viewers (2.2 million) than the NHL playoff game the same night (1.9 million).

I don’t mind these ladies having their newfound success and popularity. What irks me is how entitled they all are that they feel they are bigger than they really are. They have massive chips on their shoulder for no real reason.
