Water polo is arguably the toughest sport to participate in.

Combination of rugby and martial arts, all while treading water. Brutal. Had a guy in the office the other day who played at Pepperdine. He said at that level the best players are 6-3 to 6-8 and 230-260.

I watched water polo in the Olympics. It looked very brutal, and also very gay.

Hockey is the most brutal and overall physically demanding.... water polo takes more endurance.

Not even close. The NFL is the most brutal. Half of hockey rosters are littered with guys weighing 190 pounds

I'm not following your logic. Player weight has little to do with physical demand of the sport. I'd actually love to see an O lineman try to skate like a hockey player, let alone actually play hockey.

I understand. I just doubt there are injuries like Joe Theismann, Eric LeGrand, etc. in hockey often, if at all.

Football is extremely brutal

As far as participation (not actually competing against pros) the OP is correct. Any average Joe's can't go out and play some pick-up water polo. The game literally would not be possible.

Most other sports that can't be said

Hockey? Guys play hockey well into their 40s. Any of the collision positions in the NFL are way more grueling. Running Backs have nothing left after 30 and almost all the Line backers have brains of mush and mutilated limbs.

They are by far the most grueling positions in sports and it could all be over on any play.
