I don't know if they were the original colors, but the throwbacks we wore during LF7's tenure were on point. They were more in line with the colors Washington uses.

color is pretty interesting

Deer have bleu and green cones so they can’t see red or orange. Which is why an orange tiger just having stripes is enough to make him hard to see in the jungle.

They didn’t get colors cause of Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras stuff wouldn’t have been up in NOV.

Paraphrasing from an old LSU book I have - they think some downtown Civil War bar had purple and gold. That hang out inspired LSU’s colors.

It would be nice if LSU, and LSU clothing manufacturers, would always use the correct shades of purple and gold. It seems other schools do a better job of maintaining the proper colors. Auburn and Florida seem to use the same blue and orange (different colors of blue and orange for each school, but consistent within the school) for all their gear and clothing.

Those videos of color blind people wearing the sunglasses that lets them see color it's pretty remarkable it's tough to imagine what it would be like not to be able to see color

"However, one football game many years ago, when LSU was playing Tulane, some fans came to town, and the only colors of fabric in large supply due to the anticipation of Mardi Gras were green, gold and purple. Hence, LSU wears gold and purple. Can you confirm this?"

Well, Oliva is correct that the go-to Baton Rouge department store of the time, Reymond's, had purple and gold ribbon, but not green. The store was, indeed, getting ready for Mardi Gras, but there was a delay in the delivery of green ribbon.
So, Coates bought what was available.

It's interesting that when this story is told they always emphasize that Reymond's Department Store was stocking up on purple and gold for the "upcoming carnival season". The football game they were buying the ribbons for was played in November.

So? The carnival season starts in early January. In those days you probably started stocking up earlier because of limited transportation.

Game was played 11/25, Mardi Gras season starts 1/6, only 41 day difference.
