Will the breakup or significant weakening of the ACC force ND into a conference?

When FSU, Clemson, and a few others leave the ACC for B10/SEC, virtually every marquee opponent for a future ND schedule will be in one of those 2 conferences. Whatever is left of the ACC will fully be considered a 2nd tier conference along with the Big 12. A continued partnership with the ACC for 5 games will essentially lower ND to that Tier 2 status in the eyes of recruits.
On the flip side, cherry picking big games to legitimize the schedule will become much harder because all of those names will already have a ridiculously tough conference schedule of 9, likely 10 games in the near future. They don’t need or even want ND as a non conference opponent.
So you have a cascading effect of reduced prestige, difficulty recruiting, a mostly non-P2 schedule, NBC not willing to pay B10 level money for that, and the already existing ban from top 4 playoff seeds. I don’t see how it continues other than voluntarily weakening the program through pure stubbornness.

I have always thought ND would eventually join the Big 10

they should have joined the big ten 30 years ago when penn st joined the conference, their location is perfect for that

They'll be in the B10 in 3 yrs., along with FLA State.
Clemson and either UVA or N Carolina will be in the SEC.

We already see a dramatic shift in USC’s mindset of not valuing big non conference games. And clearly they no longer are beholden to tradition by being the first and key defection that killed the Pac 12. ND already lost the Michigan rivalry. If USC no longer schedules them annually that would be the dagger. With a Big Ten schedule of primarily midwest games, what value does Notre Dame add to USC anymore?

The Big 10 wouldn't give FLA State the time of day.
Give me a break.

FSU and Clemson have firm SEC and/or B10 invites. Its the only way they sue their own conference like this. Media reporting seems to be trending towards the SEC not expanding in existing states and a continuing resolve by the B10 to only add AAU members. One of those isn’t true.

I would say they are square in the Big Ten Geographically but when we have west coast teams in the big ten, and a Texas and two California teams in the ACC, geography means nothing.
That said, the reason they hitched their wagon to the ACC is for recruiting reasons. They want to have a least one game a year in Florida/Georgia/North Carolina.

With the current landscape, I wouldn’t be surprised to see ND pick the Big 12, maybe SEC. Big 10 makes and has always made too much sense.

B1G...100000000%
Money is what this is all about and the B1G new media deal is unmatched...the B1G is going to be bringing massive amounts of money. It will be fiscally irresponsible for them not to join the B1G.

I don't think their fans are going to be happy once the reality of schedules filled w/the likes of Purdue, Iowa, Rutgers, Maryland, Indiana, and a Z list OOC hits them in the face.

No. They’ll continue to think their “relevancy” allows them to not be in a conference.

College football is dying and I hate it. It may be making buckets of money but everything fun and special about it is being sucked out.
