WNBA franchise valuation

The other day I read the San Antonio’s WNBA team, the SA Stars, will be relocating to Las Vegas. Like everyone else I didn’t even know that San Antonio had a team. But then I started thinking of what is the value of a WNBA franchise. Forbes lists annually the values for the NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL, and MLS teams. But they don’t list the WNBA team’s value. I can not find any information out there. Can someone provide some info on the value of these WNB’s franchises?

probably worthless

Half of the W.N.B.A.’s 12 teams lose money, and they benefit from revenue generated by the N.B.A.’s national television and sponsorship deals. This season, the $25 million the W.N.B.A. is getting from its primary broadcaster, ESPN, is a tiny fraction of the N.B.A.’s average $930 million payment from ESPN and TNT, which will rise to about $2.6 billion next season.

From what I've heard, the NBA props up the WNBA.
If true, that should tell you all you need to know about the valuation of WNBA teams.

A lot of WNBA players make the majority of their money playing in overseas leagues during the WNBA offseason. That should tell you something.

About the same as a Blockbuster video franchise.

Collectively less than the value of TigerDroppings.

Might be tied in with the NBA franchises.

Is it because they're all (or most) are basically entities of their coinciding NBA franchises?
I know the Liberty are the "sister team" of the NY Knicks.

That's not the case anymore.
Liberty went up for sale last week, been losing too much money despite being 4th in the league in attendance.

While all of the eight original WNBA franchises were owned and affiliated with NBA teams, only three of the 12 teams now have NBA partners — Indiana, Phoenix and Minnesota.

Can you write them off as charity organizations?

Loses from this biz could offset the tax liability of another business

Here's some Onion:
According to a report by Forbes magazine, the Minnesota Lynx are easily the WNBA’s richest franchise, boasting an estimated enterprise value of nearly four dollars.
“With merchandise revenue at 29 cents and season ticket sales topping a dollar for the first time in history, the Minnesota Lynx are a financial powerhouse in the WNBA,” wrote Forbes editor Mark Furlow, who also cited a diet soda a fan bought for $1.25 in September as a major reason for the team’s record-breaking profits. “Meanwhile, the team’s brand new uniforms, together with a colorful ‘Minnesota Lynx’ sign, accounted for a whopping 74 cents in assets, helping to propel the franchise to dizzying levels of success that other WNBA teams can only dream of.”
Sources also confirmed that negotiations are currently underway to renew superstar forward Seimone Augustus’ contract while keeping the Lynx under the WNBA’s 55-cent salary cap.

You haven't been paying much attention, then

They were originally the Utah Starzzz. Relocated here in the early 00's.
I never went to one of their games, though. Spurs rule this town. Stars won't be missed.

Diana Taurasi and Candace Parker made 7 figures in U.S. dollars playing overseas in Russia. They made a little over $100k a year (league max) playing in the WNBA.

This should tell you everything about their valuation.

Half of the W.N.B.A.’s 12 teams lose money.
In a rare and candid moment last year, James L. Dolan, who owns the W.N.B.A.’s Liberty and the N.B.A.’s Knicks, told HBO’s “Real Sports” that he came close to handing the franchise back to the league in 2015.
“It hasn’t made money,” he said. “Its prospects of making money, at that time and even today, are still slim.”

No one knows, because no one wants to buy a WNBA team.
