EXCLUSIVE: 20th Century is looking to head back to the high seas as sources tell Deadline the studio is developing a new Master and Commander pic with A Monster Calls scribe Patrick Ness adapting the script. Insiders add it is still early days as no director or talent are attached at this time.
The 2004 adaptation Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, was set during the Napoleonic Wars and follows Capt. Jack Aubrey, played by Russell Crowe, a brash British captain pushes his ship and crew to their limits in pursuit of a formidable French war vessel around South America. Paul Bettany also starred in the film that went on to make more then $200 million worldwide and received 10 Oscar nominations for including one for Best Picture.
Since the original was part of a big book series, the idea was always to adapt other books in to films but another film never got into position to move forward. Sources say this film would be based on the first book in the series where it shows a young Aubrey when he is given his first command and also explores how his friendship with his naval surgeon, Stephen Maturin, begins. Since this would be set in the early days of Aubrey, its also likely they would have new talent playing Aubrey and Maturin as well.

This should have been done 15 years ago
Now russell crowe looks like this
I’m certain I’ll see the new one with whoever takes the mantle if it comes to fruition but I’ll resent it because we were cheated out of more.

Absurdly good movie, not a weak scene in the first.

One of the best of the decade in my opinion.

One of my favorite movies of all time. Hopefully they can recapture the spirit.

Huzzah! I've been re-reading the series lately. I'm only at Post Captain.

Just finished watching it again, so good. Unfortunately had to go up against Return of the King so it doesn't get nearly the recognition it deserves.
Oh no... I can see where this is going

If anyone is interested in a rewatch, or God forbid the first watch, it is on Prime.

I'm in. The best scene in the books is Aubrey meeting Maturin. Especially after the first read through the series. And the scene is the beginning of the first book, hopefully this is setting up a TV series. The books are PERFECT for making a series.

Going to be a woman and a lesbian love triangle.
I can see it now.

Better late than never
I was always so pissed this wasn't a movie franchise.
I mean there's so much source material - even more than Ian Fleming's Bond.
I mean Hollywood is so desperate recycling and remaking movies - well, if you have no original scriptwriters...here you go, there's like 19 books out there.

Is Maximus about to 'cup and share' in that pic?

Watched this movie on a first date.
She wanted to watch Looney Tunes: Back in Action but we showed up late.
Watched Master and Commander instead. She fell asleep halfway through because she was bored. I loved it. I dropped her off and didn't see her again.
I mean fricking looney tunes back in action. We were 18

When you're young taking a girl to a movie is so cliche...
But so very necessary. You can tell A LOT about people based on their reactions to movies.
Basically you know instantly if you're compatible and would ever have anything to talk about.
I knew a girl who hated It's A Wonderful Life. Then I knew she basically hated men and their dreams.
