I forgot to include it in my Top 20 when we voted on the board here. It's truly fantastic. The music is awesome too.
Really might be my favorite ending of all time.

SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!
What's your take on the line when Norman says all the bones in Paul's hand were broken? Do you think that means Paul went down fighting, or that they sort of tortured him or beat the shite out of him so bad and broke everything they could? Just curious, cause I always took it as him trying to fight back, but some friends of mine thought he was tortured.

SPOILERS!!!
I took it to mean he went down fighting. In any event, I wasn't referring to that as really being part of the ending. I was referring the last 2 minutes where they show Norman fishing as an old man.

The first thing that popped in my head was that that was his casting hand for fly fishing and they destroyed his hand...

Yeah, see that's what my friends thought too, and I had just never thought about it like that. It makes some sense though. I wonder if the book elaborates on that anymore that the movie or if its just as ambiguous. I guess the author didn't know what actually happened in real life, so he could have kept it ambiguous since he never knew either.

I always figured they caught him cheating at one of his shady speak-easy poker games...

I always thought it was the "went down fighting" thing.

I'm not saying it wasn't that, but I don't get how because he got into a fight that all of the bones would be broken in his hand. Seems an odd line of dialogue for them to note if he just got into a fight.

He fought with reckless abandon and callous disregard for his own well being, much like how he lived the rest of his life?
Who knows? I'm probably way off. That's just what I always thought.

I agree with that. But it just seems like all of the bones broken in his hand is supposed to be symbolic of something else...I wouldn't think that would have been the injury that killed him as awful as that would have been.
I even read the imdb trivia on this today hoping it would shed some light. Alas, it did not.

Brad Pitt played the perfect role as a PK. The scenery, characters, plot and performances were awesome.

Fly fishing is for vajayjays... That said... I loved the movie!

saw it in the last couple of months for the first time in maybe 10 years. It's beautifully filmed and an intimate slice of life. It does plod a little here and there. The power is in the intimacy. That said, I thought it lacked a tad of umph to go from classic good to great.
The real life story of not starting to write until in his 60's or 70's is all the more inspirational with the tie-in at the end with him aged.

My favorite part is when Julie Ormond waits for him by the river, but ends up marrying Norman. What a slut.
