Regular dirt bags in space was a novel concept.
Usually they looked like John Glenn before Alien.
The movie is more revolutionary beyond scare tactics...the 70s gritty vibe on its last legs before the 80s.
They were going for space truckers, and they nailed it.

It is canon, however the films didn’t include it

AvP& AvP 2 happen in 2004
Prometheus is 2093. Films did not include AvP. As the films claim David created the first Xenomorph, they cannot be around for AvP.
Note: David did not create the first Xenomorph. There is one mural in Prometheus proving they exist due to the Engineers.

Also, Space Truckers is a great movie as well.

Facehugger scenes still get me to jump out of my seat. Iconic movie.

It was great in that I think everyone assumed the Tom Skerritt would end up being the hero but then he gets jacked halfway through the movie. Oh well.

I don't think any scene in any movie could ever affect me the same way as the original chestburster scene. It could not have been set up more perfectly.
I was 9 or 10 years old, and I had nightmares for months.

If you’re not familiar with the story behind that filming that scene, you should check it out.
Basically, Ridley Scott and only a handful of the “need to know” actors and crew knew what was going to happen. Scott wanted the horror and disgust to be as genuine as possible. Most of the actors in the scene only knew that the alien was going to appear in some form or fashion, but nothing else.

My dad tells the story of seeing it in theaters. People literally shite on themselves or vomited from a certain scene.
Would love to watch that movie with someone who’s never seen it before, in theaters of course.

I find that unlikely.

read an interview with Scott before the films release in ‘79
he said “people are going to go into the theater and say ‘okay, show me the monster’. And then we’ll show them the monster. And they’ll run out of the theater screaming.”
hyperbolic, to be sure, but that thing sure was the scariest thing i’d ever seen on a movie screen up to that time

Find it as you will.
But that story is consistently told.

I believe similar things happened during screenings of The Exorcist.
Granted, the thing that squicked people out the most was apparently Regan getting a spinal tap and not any of the actual possession stuff.

where is this playing on the big screen? cant find it with a search
Looks like there was some kind of special event on April 26th for the anniversary.
I caught it at my local AMC for a classic night a couple years ago, and it was incredible seeing it on the big screen for the first time. All the details of the set designs & construction were so much more impressive on a big screen.

A great movie. A horror movie(almost a slasher movie) in sci-fi clothing.
The set design was awesome.
H.R. Giger’s alien creation was perfect and unique.
And Ridley Scott nailed it masterfully.

At the time of filming, the biggest names in the cast were probably Skerritt and Yaphet Kotto (Parker), with Veronica Cartwright (Lambert) also having some roles such as the Body Snatchers film a year or two before.
Sigourney Weaver was a nobody whose main experience was doing stage acting.
That entire crew went on to have long careers and is a great example of how having an excellent casting director can make or break a film. Being able to pick a great ensemble cast and identifying talent which is not yet mainstream are both big things that can boost a production, especially given that Scott made the most unknown cast member the final girl.

Thanks for posting this. What a great story within a story. Alien is one of my all-time faves, and I was unaware of this behind-the-scenes stuff. I always assumed Weaver had some screen experience under her belt at the time; otherwise, they wouldn't have casted her as the eventual main protagonist and heroine.
Talk about directorial wisdom and vision. Wow.
And what a masterful job of subtly setting up Ripley as the main protagonist without the audience even realizing it. I wish I could go back in time and watch Alien without already knowing Ripley as the protagonist of the trilogy. Man, that must've been thrilling to watch, genuinely not knowing what was going to happen.

Per Wiki, she had appeared in Annie Hall two years before Alien but a lot of her scenes got cut back because of theater commitments.

i can buy that people vomited. i have a hard time believing there were people literally pooping on themselves in the movie theater. i've been pretty scared in my life, up to and included near death in combat and i've never come close to shitting myself (at least not from fear...but i digress).
but hey, whatever. maybe people in the 1970s were just shitting all over themselves during scary scenes in movies.
