Aliens - would you have gone back in to get Newt?

I honestly think just to convince myself I wasn’t a complete coward, I would’ve loaded up just like Ripley, gone down the elevator, sat there for a second to shite my pants then go back up and tell Bishop and Hicks she was dead. I would then spend the rest of my life trying to convince myself I tried.
But that’s what makes Ripley the goat heroine. Going down that elevator she was terrified, scared to death. She takes that long pause with her eyes closed like “wtf am I doing God help me.” She’s turning corners blasting the flame, creeping along. But she had to do it anyways.
That’s how you write a true hero, regardless of sex. Nowadays we get Mary Sue’s who are invincible and not scared of shite which isn’t realistic.
I also want a pair of her sneakers, those things were bad arse.
Anyways, just finished Aliens for the millionth time. What’s amazing is I still find myself nervous when Ripley goes back in for Newt

Of course.
Then I'd be in one of greatest scenes in movie history.
But I wouldn't wait until the Elevator to load my guns.
That's just inviting catastrophe.

Aliens came out in 1986.
Well before Jennifer Lawrence was even born.

Yeah, the scene is well written and she’s a great heroine

And this is why. They wrote the development around Ripley’s maternal instincts. The development of the relationship between them felt natural, real and believable. Ripley’s struggles felt real and not forced.

Don't forget, Ripley was low on ammo too. She would have been really screwed without the flamethrower.

That’s one of those golden moments. She does this heavy inhale like she’s psyching herself up because she knows this could be suicidal.
I’d love to know if that was improvised or directed.
On the directors cut of the movie they give you more insight in to Ripley. After she’s rescued from the Nostromo she tries to find her daughter. But so much time has passed that her daughter is dead. So she never got to really be a mother.
When she meets Newt she has a second chance and her maternal instincts play a big part in her insistence on saving her.
Also, those shoes were custom made by Reebok for the movie. I always wanted a pair.
Aliens is a top 10 movie for me. It’s glorious.

Also gotta remember she had basically lost her own daughter, Newt had become sort of her surrogate daughter, and she had literally nothing else to live for. Not to make less of her heroism, bc I agree she is the GOAT. Just saying she was doing it not only to save Newt but to save herself in a lot of ways.
Slight aside - I absolutely love the little exchange she has with Hicks where they give each other their first names. "Don't be gone long, Ellen" is one of my favorite lines in the movie.

Agreed. It’s a great great movie. Totally different tone than Alien but amazing on its own way.

you got me thinking I need to rewatch this movie again.

Oh, and we should mention that whoever decided to kill Newt and Hicks OFFSCREEN at the beginning of Aliens 3 needs to be castrated with an old manual typewriter. Just smash his sack until it peels off.
Hicks was one of the coolest supporting characters ever!
Idiots.

I would have had Bishop go back to get Newt. If they don't make it out, then only one human dies. Ripley can fly the plane. She's done it before.

Not sure if I would or not, but I’m also not a woman with PTSD who found out she lost her daughter while in hyper sleep for 60 years.
Newt was a replacement goldfish for Ripley’s daughter but only discussed in the director’s cut.

Alien 3 was such a clusterfrick it wasn’t funny.
Newt got killed off because bringing the actress back wasn’t feasible due to aging.
Hicks? Originally he was brought back instead of Ripley when Weaver wasn’t expected to return. Then at some point the decision was made to kill him off and Michael Biehn made more in likeness rights for the pic of Hicks in the start of the movie than he got for Aliens thanks to the resulting lawsuit.

Ripley’s maternal instinct kicked in. Good characters are ones based in truth. Take what makes the sexes different and interesting and connect it to a good story. You don’t make a woman a hero by making her a man but by pushing in on her femininity. It’s not that hard.

Exactly. It was a celebration of femininity and the power within mothers to self-sacrifice for the children of our society. Exemplified through a physical, military-like battle with aliens, we saw just how badass women can be both in who they are as women and what they can become as women.
Nowadays, characters are portrayed as heroes because they outwardly suppress their innate feminine traits and redefine them as a defiance against a mythical patriarchy.

Production hell killed it. Theatrical release is garbage. But I like the assembly cut and I'll die on that hill.

I’d read the comic before watching the film.
The comic covered David Fincher’s intent for what the assembly cut would be and, while no Alien or Aliens, it was a LOT better than what got released.
Capturing the alien and Golic going batshit and releasing it because he thought it was his friend added a lot to things.
And on another note, the prison doc that Ripley fricks is none other than Charles Dance, Tywin Lannister himself.
