In an alternate world history shaped by superheroes, once-celebrated “costumed adventurers” have been banned by a society disenchanted with vigilantism. Now, in 1985, the murder of The Comedian, a hero-turned-government operative, draws the attention of Rorschach, the last of the outlawed vigilantes. Rorschach’s investigation embroils his retired colleagues, Nite Owl, Silk Spectre, Dr. Manhattan and Ozymandias, in conflict with their pasts, with each other and in a mystery that threatens their lives and a world on the brink of war.

Nice. One of my favorite novels of all time.

I've always thoroughly enjoyed Snyder's version but being animated you could pull off an ending more true to the novel than the live action did. You can do shot for shot scenes.

Says it will be released digital, but I guess not in theatres or on streaming?

I guess not. I hope they release it on Max at some point.

Good. Another opportunity for people to seek out and read Watchmen for the first time. When Snyder's movie came out my kids lent out my copies of the TPB out to so many friends that I ended up having to (happily) rebuy them for my shelf.

Wild guess:

They're introducing Watchmen into the animated series in order to justify an animated version of Doomsday Clock later.

Supposedly this version is going to be very true to the original including the ending. Also, Alan Moore is going to hate it.

A lot of people have said the movie ending made more sence.

Does anyone else kind of feel like they’re currently living in Watchmen?

The movie ending was okay for an adaptation but the book ending is iconic

Not taking that bet… Moore has hated pretty much every adaptation of his work with the possible exception of For The Man Who Has Everything on Justice League Unlimited.

He has had a massive red arse over Watchmen for years because the rights were supposed to revert back to him but never did because it was one of the first titles to ever be published in trade paperback form pretty much forever after the original limited series.

I suspect there is very little that old curmudgeon doesn't hate.

This was my thought also, and I really hope that happens.

They split up Crisis on Infinite Earths into 3 movies. The third movie in that series was released on disc/digital this week, and the second movie hit Max on the same day (originally released in April of this year). Hopefully they follow the same trend with these Watchmen films.

He also hates that people correctly view Rorschach as the hero of the story. Apparently he doesn't realize that's how he wrote the character.

It wouldn't surprise me if Moore never saw it.

GQ.com
quote:

“I would be the last person to want to sit through any adaptations of my work,” said Moore. “From what I’ve heard of them, it would be enormously punishing. It would be torturous, and for no very good reason.”
quote:

The 2001 film of From Hell, starring Johnny Depp, was especially derided, but Moore purists would argue all adaptations of his work—including the critically acclaimed, Emmy-winning Watchmen limited series from HBO, which diverges rather boldly from its source material—are at best reductive misinterpretations and at worst offensively awful. Not only has Moore had nothing to do with these adaptations—he famously hasn’t watched any of them.

There's a famous incident where Damon Lindelof or one of the showrunners from the HBO series sent Moore a powder blue apron with a hydrogen symbol on it, thinking that would entice Moore into giving his input on the series. They sent a (humorous attempt at a) letter saying they were the bastards destroying Watchmen. He told them they should know that the studio was told to never contact him about anything.

Hopefully the people doing this new series knew enough to leave Moore the frick alone.

I've watched them and while they're good, the Crisis movies feel like a stepdown in quality from the previous series of movies - The Flashpoint Paradox, War, Apokolips War, etc...

For example, during the larger character scenes, it's painfully obvious to rush it through a lot of the characters are just static - not even minor animation to give them life. They're basically cardboard standees.
